Accidentally Out-Leveling Your Craft

So I always break down/research all the heavy armor/metal weapons that drop for me if I'm not going to wear them... but I've found that my crafting is always too high so the writs I get are always for ingots I don't have yet. I just hit level 40 but my crafting has been in Ebony since I was 38. I don't know if this is from my Subscriber XP bonus or what, but it's pretty inconvienient. Never thought I'd complain about getting too much XP!

Anyone else experiencing this? Have any suggestions other than don't break stuff down? I always break it down because I want the mats and the chance to get the tempers.

*EDIT*

It should be noted I don't even have a leveling partner, and I don't even craft that much gear. I'll make things to fill in gaps in my own armor and that's it.

hmm I thought you could pick up low level writs from low level towns but I could be wrong.

I don't think so. Because I've picked them up in higher level areas and were sent to lower level areas to turn them in. I think they are entirely based on your skill level.

I thought the writs went by the skill points you put into that one specific skill for each craft? That's how it is for me, anyway. I usually just put the skill point in once I perceive a problem in getting enough material to fulfill the writ the next day.

Ohhhhh that might be it then, I always put skill points in as they are available. Maybe I should just hold off on skill points until my level has caught up with the skill level.

You can always sell some gear to avoid getting too much XP. What will you do in the VR ranks anyway? Your crafting levels will be maxed by the time you reach VR1.
Sell 2H weapons, they are the most cost effective.

I'll probably pick up a second craft, I'm thinking enchanting so I don't have to outsource gearing myself up and can be more competitive in selling my services.

I got around this the other day by resetting my skill points.

I only put 1 skill point into the material passives to start with & only adding more points in as I run low on the low level materials.
Ive been crafting writ items for my 3 low level alts to hand in as well so Im already up the 4th or 5th passive in blacksmithing. At this rate I will probably stop doing writs when I get up to Cadwells Gold just to let my stock build up again.

I've been hoarding my materials for when I start crafting for profit. I have several hundred of each ingot type banked. I only craft to fill gaps in my own gear and for writs, which I've been locked out of doing for awhile because my skill is too high.

I was hoarding but started selling stacks of ingots for the bank space. Im lacking the materials after Ebony too & when I realised I was up to level 42 in smithing & clothing, I started doing everything I can to hit 45.
I need that 20% research reduction yesterday haha.

hmm I thought you could pick up low level writs from low level towns but I could be wrong.

You can pick up Writs in any Crafting Hub in your base Alliance, or Coldharbor or Craglorn. Where you turn them in depends on the Writ Level. And, as you have found out, the Writ level is based on the Material, Solvent, Potency or Recipe Level that you have invested points in, not your Crafting Skill Level. In other words a player with L50 in crafting can do L1 Writs if they only put the one point in.

Since so many things key off the material level, only put points into that for the level of stuff you need to make. However, the passives are good to invest in if you need them and have the skill points available.

I never do the crafting wits, and I have a blacksmiting level of 36 and my toon is 44. I too could craft Ebony/VR weapons long before I could actually have the materials.

Just stop doing the wits - they aren't exactly necessary for leveling...

I've gotten several gold tempers as rewards for completing them though, which I want to stock up on.

Btw @Nestor you wouldn't happen to be Nestor from the DAoC Catacombs forums, would you? Way back in the day.
