Magicka melee templar pvp build tips?

Jamersonstjames_ESO
Been loving playing my templar as a ranged sun mage, but i want to change it up. What are your thoughts on an in your face melee magicka build? Im wanting to build my character to basically focused charge>puncturing sweep spam>radiant opression, along with maybe blazing shield, devouring swarm, and breath of light. What weapon would be the best for this type of fighter? Right now im using a destruction staff, but maybe swapping to a shield could work? I am not sure how weapon damage plays a role in spell damage...

Also what type of armor? Right now i am in all light but maybe all heavy could work? At level 47 all my points are into magicka and my regen is still ass, so would it matter? Just looking for some tips from someone running something similar.

Ps this is mainly focused on 1vX, i love going into fights alone and trying to get a kill, even if i get killed by their buddies after :)

Light armor, with restoration staff and dual wield
On dual wield use toppling charge, annulment, puncturing sweeps, radiant oppression and cleanse
Always keep annulment up and charge in, spam puncturing sweeps then RP and they are dead.

Resto staff(using for passive to regen magicka on heavy attacks) have Breath of life, steadfast ward, rune focus, vampires bane, and blazing spar
If your, near death use steadfast ward, and heal, drop a rune focus, vamp bane to slow them and blazing spear if needed to stun

I've changed my temp to just being a healer in pvp for now, but here's what I used to use in solo to small group play:

Gear: neck and belt = adroitness, 2 rings = cyrodiil's light, 3 armor = cyrodiil's light, 3 armor = magnus crafted (chest is heavy, make another major piece medium).

weapon 1: sword and board = both magnus
weapon 2: resto staff = magnus

skill bar 1: toppling charge, puncturing sweep, radiant ward, radiant oppression, defensive stance, ult = bats or dawnbreaker of smiting
skill bar 2: breath of life, purifying ritual, dampen magic, proximity detonation, mist form, ult = barrier

rotation is to (from stealth) pop spell power and crit potion, defensive stance, and dampen magic to shield up, cast proximity detonation, gap close with toppling charge and get off a full puncturing sweep while they're stunned. If they're still high/medium health use puncturing sweep again, followed by jesus beam. Then GTFO with mist form. You need to be casting puncturing sweep and/or jesus beam most of the time so you have the 25% damage mitigation from cyrodiil's light set.

If you're focused and need to escape, mist form out, LOS behind a tree or rock to cast a single breath of life if needed before mist form spamming again. I don't actually cast barrier as my ult on 2nd bar unless I'm in a mid sized group, it's just meant for the magicka regen passive mostly.

I personally go with heavy armor. DW one bar, sword and shield the other. I then went with all out sustain with Seducers and Healers gear along with undaunted Dwemer set and finally 2 Torugs. But if wanting to be more dangerous rather than annoying and just staying alive a long time, you can go with maxing spell power, at low level that is probably Torugs, Twilight and whatever. At high lvl it would be Storm Knight, Adroitness, Cyrodils Light and Torugs.

Thanks for the suggestions, i'm gonna tinker around with them and find a build that suits my playstyle. Only been in non-vet and so far everything has been working out. Really dreading hitting vr1...going to be a long grind getting to where i can pvp again without getting one shot by vr14s

Thanks for the detailed post. How do you feel about using Soul Assault since you already have Cyrodiil's Light buffing you? Also, I'd probably swap in Bat Swarm for Barrier for 1vX play as it gives you more survivability overall and it's still cheaper to cast.

Dampen Magic is a morph of Annulment, the light armor skill.

Ohhhh thank you! Its placement in the skill tree lead me to think it was an ultimate. Derp!

My new Templar refuses to learn anything other than an instant self heal, he's a stubborn orc with heavy armor and a 2 hander.
Everyone knows the phenomenon of trying to hold your breath underwater - how at first it's alright and you can handle it, and then as it gets closer and closer to the time when you must breathe, how urgent the need becomes, the lust and the hunger to breathe. And then the panic sets in when you begin to think that you won't be able to breathe - and finally, when you take in air and the anxiety subsides...that's what it's like to be a vampire and need blood.

When I'm solo I'm mostly looking to gank, and yes I'll sometimes use soul assault as my main ult because it synergizes well cyrodiil's light and does high dps. It depends on who you're targeting though, if you see a sword and board, you should assume they have shield charge and will charge/stun and interrupt your ult (effectively wasting it). You also don't want to pop soul assault if they're close enough to bash you. I usually only use soul assault for perma block DKs (temps can't use fear...) and for sorcs running a million shields as it's the only chance I have of breaking through them to do dmg as a magicka temp. I've also been able to trick a few sorcs - most will laugh off jesus beam spam, but if you then switch to soul assault, it takes them a second or two to realize it's not another jesus beam and that can usually be your opening for a stun/burst. For sorcs, it really is just a waiting game until you can reflect back a crystal shard at them, and then do your burst rotation. Most of the time you won't be able to do enough damage to them, and if you get close, they'll bolt away. For sorcs it pretty much has to be burst or nothing.

I keep barrier on my 2nd bar only for the + magicka regen passive, I very very rarely ever cast it. If I'm 1v1 then dawnbreaker or soul assault is preferable; if I'm fighting more than one, then I'll use bats. Dawnbreaker is nice because you can add it to your burst (prox det + charge + dawnbreaker + puncturing sweep/jesus beam) whereas soul assault has to tick.

For the record I've tried Empowering Sweep as my ult, and it's just crappy :( ... it would be great if it worked like the NB equivalent Soul Harvester.

All in all, unfortunately the meta is kind of stacked against magicka temps because of nirn, but the flip side is that stamina temps can be just plain nasty (I WISH I could get puncturing sweep to hit close to the dmg they can get Biting Jabs to hit for). You can still be successful as a magicka temp, and pretty easily switch to a healing role, but you need to know when to disengage and have to play it safer than a magicka NB or sorc would.
