Why are you buying clothes at the soup store?

In all the chaos of the forums lately there are a few things I want to throw out there, and a few post I spotted today that I feel are very insightful in the current, debates. The title is relevant, and more a direct request for @ZOS and people who may be interested by it.

So the IC information, primarily the VR Stone system, has caused more than a little infighting among the content starved community. It doesn't help that Zos, until very recently, hadn't been keeping the community in the loop with information, and as we sit here like a pile of skeletons piled up in the middle of the desert Zos arrives with a dropper of water, and after delaying the first drop they pause and say, "You know, think we'll hold off on the next one for another week" before waltzing back into the wasteland. First thing for @Zos, if communication with the devs openly on the forums wasn't as rare as a blue moon, people would be more trusting in your direction and better able to understand vague amounts of information.

The kind of information i'm talking about was when it was when Rich Lambert stated "I've seen this mentioned a few times in various threads now, so i'll clarify some here. Imperial City is meant for the PVP player - it's their turn for some love. If you love PVE and are clamoring for more of that type of content, the Orsinium DLC will be exactly what you want." With the lack of content and dev communications, and the heavy placement of blatant pve content in the IC this is an odd thing to see. Cryodiil has a lot of pve content as is so it would be very odd for Zos to not include any in the IC, but as outlined in a quote below a lot of what was highlighted in the official news post for the IC update was pve content, and unless pvp players have taken a love for mob grinding and questing then I doubt it is all for them.

It just seems to me that Zos is trying to sell clothes at a soup store, catering to the community at a whole without fully realizing how the community will react when locked in a closet together until soon* arrives again. So please, people @ZOS, you don't need to wait until Quake con to start putting out the fire, or at least give a little more information. Being this tight lipped when the community has so little to go on does nothing positive, and to anyone who somehow found themselves in one of my mindless rants, the quotes i've added below I feel add a lot of context to the situation, if you agree with them or not. And I kept the whole conversation on quotes that had them, part because they add to the quote, and part because i'm to tired to trim them out. Also, if you get the reference, have a laugh every now and then, all the fighting isn't healthy.

I'm a marketer and a gamer so this statement makes me incredibly frustrated. This DLC is not being marketed as PVP only. There seems to be a huge disconnect between the devs and marketing dept. I am happy PVPers are getting much needed content, but why is there so much PVE in the Imperial City if it is meant for the PVP player?

This is copy/pasted from this page on your website and may be the cause of some of our aggrevated confusion:

The Imperial City offers many activities you can participate in. Whether you're interested in strictly PVE, PVP, or a little of both, here are some of the ways you might choose to spend your time in the Imperial City:
  • Run through the White-Gold Tower or Imperial City Prison dungeons with three friends. (You can also queue for these dungeons outside of the Imperial City, but you must have the DLC game pack.)
  • Battle enemy-alliance players and Molag Bal's forces, including the Xivkyn, in the Imperial Sewers and six Imperial Districts.
  • Earn Daedric trophies from your monster kills to open Treasure Vaults—found around the Imperial City—for Veteran Rank 16 jewelry sets and other rare finds.
  • Play through the Imperial City storyline, started by the Drake of Blades.*
  • Collect Tel Var Stones by defeating Molag Bal's minions and enemy alliance players—and try to keep yours from being taken!
  • Enter the Imperial Sewers and hunt Trove Scamps for gold and crafting supplies, and Cunning Scamps for Tel Var Stones.
  • Search for Xivkyn motif Chapters to craft the new Xivkyn style armor and weapons.
  • Get powerful new Veteran Rank 16 weapons and armor by completing the White-Gold Tower and Imperial City Prison dungeons (and the Undaunted Pledges for them), and Veteran Rank 16 armor sets by trading in your Tel Var Stones.
  • Craft three new weapon and armor sets via the set-specific crafting stations found in Imperial City.
  • Earn new collectibles by completing achievements, slaying Molag Bal's elite forces in the Imperial Sewers, and by trading in Tel Var Stones.

7 out of 10 points specifically advertise PVE aspects of the game, while only 3 are PVP oriented.

Now for another example of mixed message marketing from this page:

Imperial City DLC Game Pack Features & Content

With the purchase of the Imperial City DLC game pack, you get access to the full Imperial City zone. That includes the following:
  • All content is available to players that are level 10 and up
  • A brand new PvP/PvE space, including the six Imperial City Districts
  • New quests and key characters within the Imperial City*
  • One new Imperial City PvP Public Dungeon: The Imperial Sewers
  • Two new PvE Imperial City group dungeons with Normal and Veteran versions: White-Gold Tower and Imperial City Prison
  • The Tel Var Stone system
  • 23 completely new Veteran Rank 16 item sets, only available in Imperial City
  • Treasure Vaults that contain new Veteran Rank 16 set jewelry and a chance for even rarer finds
  • Xivkyn racial motif style
  • New collectibles only available in Imperial City (pets, polymorphs, and a costume)

*This one made me very happy and this close to purchasing... until I read your comment. Why are you ostracizing your players? I love The Elder Scrolls and any wee bit of lore or quests, I'm there! But you are telling me this DLC is not for me.

If this truly is PVP only DLC then kindly market it as such. Why are there so many PVE elements if it is only for PVP players? I PVE more than I PVP but was very interested in the new quests and characters as well as the 2 new PVE dungeons. Not to mention the new armor, weapons, and just new content in general. I would have braved the PVP part, but you are telling me not to purchase this. Why?

Afterthought: perhaps I should have bolded the few PVP only aspects...

It seems difficult to me to sustain the argument that this DLC is for PvPers only and that PvEers should not buy it when much of the content relates to PvE quests and storyline including two PvE dungeons. The fact that much of it takes place in PvP zones simply increases the confusion (not to mention the tension) by giving the PvPers the additional content they want and deserve while effectively gating the additional PvE content behind it, which seems crazy to me.

Given that PvP and PvE never mix well together it would make more sense to have the major part of this DLC structured to cater for the PvPers but with the PvE more readily accessible to the PvEers (as well as the PvPers), with the result that ZOS would maximise their revenue by making the DLC attractive to everyone.

I entirely get that this DLC is aimed at PvPers, and I wholeheartedly welcome that. I don't get that the DLC includes a lot of PvE which isn't readily accessible to PvEers unless they PvP, and which is the only effective way of advancing character levels, gear and crafting beyond VR14. It doesn't seem very well thought through to me, both community-wise and commercially.

Is it so hard to just let PvP players enjoy the only piece of new content they will probably ever see?

So unless you can gank newbs and steal their stuff you cant enjoy IC? Is that what you are saying?
Yes, killing people and taking their stones is indeed a very important part of the Imperial City DLC. A lot of PvP players have been wanting an actual penalty to dying and this seems to provide just that.

Deal with it.

No I wont deal with it as many many other players will not. As you see by this thread even other pvp centered players hate this idea. I guarantee it will be changed or I guarantee you wont have anyone to gank and steal their stuff. The place will be deserted and you and your gank buddies will have to start killing each other.

I mean how sad is it you cannot enjoy yourself without abusing other people.
If you don't want to deal with, then don't play this DLC. It's been stated over and over that this is PvP content. I don't want to deal with braindead repetitve dungeons and ridiculous questlines, so I don't. I also don't go to the forums demanding more PvP in my PvE.

Deal with it.

Story driven quest lines is what elder scrolls is all about. If you want a hardcore pvp game go find one. Also I am going to mark this so I can come back and say "I told ya so" when they remove the whole looting of stones thing.
This is The Elder Scrolls Online and the PvP has been heavily featured in all the marketing material and ZOS has even stated it considers the PvP 'end-game'.

The fact that your personal views on what constitutes an Elder Scrolls game are different does not change anything about it. You can always go play Skyrim with its focus on 'story driven quest lines' that all involve going somewhere, pressing a button and killing 50 Draugr.

You can have pvp without looting other players.
But I don't want to, ZOS doesn't want to and it seems a lot of PvP players don't want to. The fact that PvE players want it to be this way is just not that important, since this content is not meant for them.

One day you will learn its not all about you.
That's the point: This content is all about me, the PvP player.

Deal with it.

You do realize that someone has to do PvE in IC in order to release any stones into the circulation. You hate dungeons and doing quests so it will not be you. Maybe not the guy next to you. It was said that it is entirely PvP content for PvP players, yet there is need for PvE.

But why would PVPers bother with doing PVE if all they want is to kill players?
If PVPers will decide to start doing PVE then it seems that ZOS_RichLambert is simply contradicting himself stating that "IC is meant for PVP players"

It all boils down to ZOS designing around the audience they WANT to have in the game, rather than the audiences they currently have.

They have the delusion that there's a player base they can cater to that enjoys PVE'ing in a PVP zone specifically, and that's what IC really is, 80% PVE, but in a open world PVP zone. It doesn't appeal to pure PVP'ers, it doesn't appeal to pure PVE'ers.
