How does spell penetration work?

Currently i have the apprentice + the 4.2k passive from the destructive skill tree

Not sure how much that actually does, i'm having some magicka sustain problems so should i switch it for the magicka regen mundus

My build is a fire staff/s+b DK if thats relevant.
PS4 EU DC

Current CP : 756+

I have every character level 50, both a magicka and stamina version.

    Spell Pen relates to magicka based damage against shields and damage mitigation from them as well as armor. Its the same as armor pen in that it ignores a percentage of the target's shields or armor to inflict direct damage. Though the high amount of resist from shields means you still have to drop them to usually inflict core health damage.

    Is it as simple as armour - spell penetration?

    Its hard to give solid numbers because of CP, armor type, armor sets, traits, etc. Just basically, the more spell pen, spell damage, and spell critical you have the higher damage output you will have using magicka based skills in the same way you'd have more damage from weapon damage, weapon critical, and armor pen with stamina based abilities. It's practically the same it's just all about what your build is based on and the target you are currently fighting.

    hmm , ill have to look that up, if it's bugged i may as well go with the magic regen or max magic.

    The two most important things you can do to improve spell penetration are:

    1) Wear all Light Armor.

    2) Choose the Apprentice mundus stone.

    I also recommend using Divines trait on ALL armor pieces to max your Apprentice effect. If you are wearing Heavy or Medium armor, you really need to get in the habit of hitting boss targets with Elemental Susceptibility from the Destruction skill line.

    There are other things you can do to improve spell penetration, like using Sharpened/Nirnhoned trait on your weapon or investing CP points, but these things do NOT have nearly as big an effect as what I listed above.

    crushing shock is my main dps , medium weave/CS may a destructive touch to kb some people.

    But in pve group content, the tank is applying pierce armor which gives the 40% debuff, so drain is there for the magicka and the other morph is redundant as it essentially does nothing.
    Course, in PvP its a different story.

    If you download Harvens Extended stats add-on you can see how much spell penetration you have.

    On a light armor build its usually around 12-14k without the Apprentice mundus stone. Most light armor builds have 8-10k spell resist which is fully ignored so personally I prefer the Atronach mundus for magicka regen. You can improve your magicka sustain by using 3x magicka cost reduction on your jewelry and putting CPS in magicka regen/cost reduction.

    Sustain in pve is very easy compared to pvp, I can AoE for days on my spell damage build in pve because you get tons of magicka back when you kill enemies. In pvp this isnt the case and constantly buffing up takes quite a toll on your resources.

    Hence the laugh. And yes, Elemental Drain never was used for its debuff, but as a resource management utility that you're likely to use on longer single-target boss fights (OOM etc.)
