can you find treasure without the treasure maps? for example if you know there is treasure buried under a mound, do i need to have a treasure map to be able to interact with it?

Yes. I didn't think so but was just roaming last night and stumbled upon a dirt mound, dug up treasure chest.

I haven't looked at any treasure maps in the region I was in.

I don't think you can find a treasure without the map that spawns it but once it is found, if the finder doesn't take the treasure, then it is there for anyone else who wants it. This happens with treasure chests as well. Some people may take the gold and leave the loot for someone else to stumble on.

You had a map on you then.

It is not possible to even see the mounds without the maps activating it.

    You can :)

As I said in previous post I was just wandering and came across one. It's not gonna be in 'definite x location' but location area. The region I was in was grahtwood and only treasure maps I had were Auridon

Only thing I can think of is that someone only partially looted the chest.

It should not be possible to loot the mounds without the map; it's either previous partial looting, or you found some sort of glitch.

That is not what I said. Someone else had the map and spawned the treasure mound then looked at the treasure and didn't want to take it. They left it behind and went on leaving the mound which is now in that instance for anyone else following behind to find.

The maps do put the treasure mound in a definite X location. Have you ever seen one? They work exactly like the maps in Skyrim. There is a picture you have to decipher and a mound of dirt in the location marked. They don't just appear somewhere in the vicinity.

Okay...that would make sense except....:I dug up the treasure, it wasn't revealed. So how can it be partially found? I know I found this one completely by random and I'm pretty sure I found another random one in AD starter island, been weeks so can't really remember. Go try it tho, I don't have leveled alts but go to x location that you have a map for on main, then go to same location on alt.

Someone 'revealing' the dirt mound because they looked on their treasure map doesn't really make any sense to me but I have been wrong before.

Don't take this the wrong way - but yes, you are wrong in this instance. You literally can't loot, interact, etc. a treasure mound without a map. Someone had to be there previously and walked off, or just activated it themselves. There is 100% another party involved.

See that doesn't make any sense to me. Since its that way what's the point of CE chests if someone who pre ordered it can just look at the map several times and give their friends free CE chests?

I will have to test this "interact and walk off" theory. I don't think it's possible to interact with a mound if you don't have the map in your inventory.

I have plenty of. Maps though, so it will be easy to find out.

Idk now. Yesterday I would've been saying 'no' with you but I swear I just happened across a mound last night. It was pretty damn early in the morning and in veteran 3-6 zone so not a lot people on or in region (not saying I was completely alone tho, just, sparse..) but if someone did look at treasure map and spawned the mound, when I happened across it by random..did I steal it from them? Or did they also get a chest of their own to dig up?

See that's why I can't see how it's spawnable, if it's spawnable then what's to stop campers/bots just taking every chest that spawns?

I'm positive that you cannot find a treasure without having a map on you.

Okay so, I did pre order eso so I have all the CE maps. As I said I was in grahtwood but only had auridon treasure maps in my inventory that I actually viewed. Was that chest I just happened across the grahtwood CE chest? I have it in my inventory but still under AD treasure map pack, I haven't opened the grahtwood CE map specifically in inventory and obviously not viewed it (kinda being lackadaisical about treasure chest now, all up until vr I was getting them in each region but just stopped caring as it would never give me daggers/useful items so I just get em when I see em, I don't go out of my way to look for them. Last night/this morning I was just questing and happened to notice a dirt mound, I don't have any opened/viewed grahtwood maps, last one I got besides CE was in auridon).

You don't have to look at a map to activate it. Having it in your inventory activates it. Banked maps are not active.

The dirt mound, when used, consumes the map and trades it for a chest, which, like the dolmen chest, contains a single instance for your personal use. If you leave it, nobody else gets it.

Treasure map being consumed is wrong. I still have all the maps from chests I've looted

There are a few different kinds of treasure chest. There are the ones that require a key to open that are plain to see, there are one that require a map to find and dig up, and there are some that have npc's digging them up. The one's that have an npc digging them up will defend their treasure chest.

You sure it wasn't a mound from a quest then?

There are been plenty of quests where you have to dig up a mound of dirt.

You most certainly need a map in your inventory to even see the dirt mound.

Now, you never have to look at that map, just having it in your inventory is enough. That also mean that you may not even knew you had a map, especially if you play with auto-loot on.

And there are a few quest related dirt mounds that look just like the treasure map mounds.
