Why can every class use light, medium, and heavy armour?

Each class should have a specific type of armour. For example, sorcerers should have light armour or medium are; I don't know the name of the class but the tank role should wear heavy armour.

What do you guys think?

Because roles aren't defined by class. Each class can be a tank, a healer or a damage dealer - and wear armor suited for any of these roles. Also, flexible skill system is an Elder Scrolls tradition.

You can certainly restrict the armor choices you make based on the role or class you play. However, ZOS does not put this restriction on us.

That being said, if your a caster, Light Armor is your friend, if your Stamina Melee, then Medium helps, if your a Tank and need to preserve Health, then Heavy is better. But, I have a magic based Tank in Heavy Armor with no attributes in Health, so go figure.

Actually, this freedom is one of the (many) things I love about this game, you can really fine-tune your character to your taste !
Of course there are "classic" builds you can make, but I always thought it was more interesting to come up with unusual things, like a Greatsword-wielding Sorcerer ;)
You won't maximize your use of Skill Points and everything this way, but it's much more fun :p

Are there any inherent bonuses to the different armor types. I've found that most heavy armor I find in the game gives me larger Magika buffs than light armor.

Depends on what your looking at. Armor skills favor the attributes as I lined out above. Then, the armor can come with an enchantment that adds one of the three attributes. On top of that, it can be part of a matched set, either crafted, or dropped, and that can have set bonuses if you have enough pieces. You start to get something at 2 usually.

To be completely accurate, all classes can learn to fully utilise all armour types. Any schmo can put on plate mail, but only the skilled can use it properly. So there's that...

ESO is all about playing how you want to play. This was the goal and mindset that went onto creating the game.

    I love it! : )

    Thanks @Gamertaglemieux for the reply

I will definitely add you. I'm sort of a low level on the Ebonheart Pact.

I have to agree with what others have said. It is how the game was designed, to play how YOU want to play.

Another way to look at it as well is that this inherently creates almost "subclasses" within your given class. A heavy armored sorcerer is essentially a battle mage, a medium armored one can be another subclass (spellsword perhaps?), along with the light armored sorcerer being the typical "mage". Looking at the templar class, heavy armored can resemble paladins, light armored are more like priests, etc. All of this can be accomplished without them having to spend the resources to create additional class skill lines for each of these subclasses, simply the play style changes.

I personally think it is a wonderful aspect of the game as it allows for one to play multiple "class" types on one single character if they so choose. For example I primarily wear heavy armor and tank as a sorcerer, but should I choose to I can also play a spell flinging mage.
