I've been hearing a lot of people talk about the champion system and I'm getting the feeling its not something people want. But what is it? I haven't seen a single person explain how it works yet. what makes it so much worse than the veteran system?

The Champion System is a horizontal progression system that starts when you get to Veteran Rank 1. It gives you no levels but when you earn a Champion Point you spend it in one of three sections that correspond to the point type you've earned. Each section is further divided into three sections known as Constellations:
    Warrior (red)
    The Steed
    The Lady
    The Lord

    Thief (green)
    The Tower
    The Lover
    The Shadow

    Mage (blue)
    The Apprentice
    The Atronoch
    The Ritual

Spending a point grants you a very tiny increase in whatever star the point was spent in plus a small bonus to Health, Stamina or Magicka. Essentially you grind to get Champion Points for what amounts to about a 0.1% increase in whatever you spent the point on.

Personally I dislike the champion System because at Veteran Rank 14 it feels for the first time in ESO like I'm being forced to grind mobs to get a reward so small its barely noticeable with no real character progression.

The main thing about the champion system is - its account wide. Meaning once you get to veteran levels, ANY champion points you earn will be added to an account wide pool for EACH character of yours to spend insupport of their individual build.

Meaning if your main earns 25 c-points, and your secondary character 5 c-points, while your third and fourth are still working through the mainstory, all four will be able to spend 30 c-points on small boni (in an 1-1-1 rotation: warrior, thief, mage, with no limitation as to which of the four options in each of the three constellation - there is something good for any build with every c-point spent).
One will spend them one way to support their stamina build, the other will spend them differently to support their magica build, and so on... but the benefits taper off, so the more points you spend, the less you get for them (for example, spend 10 points in one advantage to gain a 5% bonus, but 20 points will only raise the bonus to 8%, and 30 points to 10%, etc.; so that those who have way more c-points then you are not getting an overwhelming advantage. Though they still will have a noticable one.)

And its not really supposed to lead to grinding for c-points (though naturally some power-hungry people do just that), its supposed to provide slow progression throughout a loooong time of future ESO playing.

Something to do at end game to make your games easier.
Especially when you roll out a new character, with 3600 CP you'll get to V14 in no time.

People just hate having stuff left to do, so people hate Champion System.

    Thing is..
If they have nothing to do, they'll whine anyways.

Better to have something to do over nothing to do.

It doesn't sound so bad. I can understand why it would annoy some players who have worked hard to get to VR14. But it sounds like something I can work with. Thanks for the help

The reason some people complain about is... is that they consider they will never be able to "catch up" to someone who had been busy playing six months longer then they. Or who has been playing more then they.

Personally I have no problem with that. I am more a casual player, so guess I have my average amount of C-points for longtime PC players, and know well enough the hardcore grinders will easily have twice that or more.
    So what?
Yeah, they can kick my butt in cyrodil... but then, all the time I have been playing, so could the people with better gear, using better food buffs, and so on. One-on-one. So the solution is join a siege group when I feel like PvP, add my arrows to their effort, and hope the other side doesn't bring more forces.
    Outside cyrodil... who cares?
Oh, sure, they have an advantage... but as long as your enjoyment of the game doesn't hinge on "being better" then someone who spent more time playing then you, no big.
Find friends who don't care about "being best" and enjoy the game!
