Two Questions about the Alliance War.

Question 1:

If I have my "main" as my PvE character, can I use my "second" as my PvP character and have the same Alliance Rank on both/all characters on my account?

It may seem like a stupid question.
But, with this game it seems some things are character-only, and others are account-wide...and I can't make any sense out of how they chose which would be which. (lol)
I did an internet search for this, and only found things about the ranks, and how to gain AP faster.

Question 2:

When I look at another player in the game they have little icon-like things to the right of their name. (One looks a little like a spade.)
I always wondered what they were, but just assumed it had to do with them being in a group.
When searching for the answer to my question above I saw some icons that looked similar which corresponded to Alliance Rank.
Is this what they actually are?

I generally don't do PvP, unless the game has Open-World PvP (Which I prefer in my MMOs, honestly.).
But, I want to give ESO PvP a fair shot, and just want to know as much as possible about it before diving into the deep end.

Thank you for your time.

Alliance rank is per character not per account.

The symbol net to the name is the PvP rank. You can look under achievements to see what ranks are available.

To the first question, you generally want to PvP and PvE on a character so as to progress it as far as possible, plus achievement hunters will have an easier time that way. The reason to do both is so you can max out skill lines and such that are only advanced in PvE as well as the ones that require gaining AP.

I think one of the wiki sites has the alliance rank icons as well so you know what rank people are when you see them in game. They have a pretty cool progression, going from military style, to boxes, to moon shapes, then stars. I'm approaching praetorian which is my favorite icon.
