Why 5 pieces this 2 pieces that?

Hello everyone,

Just thought I would consult with the keepers of knowledge here on the forums about my question. Basically I always hear/ read people say they wear (for example) 5 pieces of heavy armour and 2 pieces of light. Why is this? Why not wear full heavy armour or full light armour or full medium and gain the additional benefits from the extra 2 pieces?

Thank you very much and would love to hear back from you guys!

For the purpose of armor-specific passives, a full set is considered to be 5 pieces. Some players wear, for example, 5 heavy + 1 light + 1 medium to make use of the Undaunted passives.

Personally, I wear 7 heavy. The benefits from the passives don't stop at 5 pieces, you continue to get additional benefits from wearing all 7 pieces of a particular type of armor.

At lower levels, this is an easy way to level up all three armour skill lines. You never know what you might want to switch to later. At end game, it's usually for the passives. Especially the Undaunted passive.

It depends on what additional benefits you are looking for.

If wearing 5 pieces or heavy gives you enough protection, and two pieces of light add some magicka regen, which you usually lack, that's one option. Same with medium and stamina regen.

Also, there are passives in the Undaunted line that give you bonuses for each type of armor you are wearing.

So it's a matter of the individual character and what their needs are.

Hybrid builds, For instance on my DK (dps build) i wear 5light/2med . i have all light armor passives, and for med armor passives only the crit bonus.

On my templar (PAL build) i use only heavy armor for tanking purposes.

Also another reason , especially at lower lv's is to gain access to all the Active armor abilities, for instance on my sorcerer i wear light armor, but i used to wear some heavy/med pieces just to increase skill to 22 so i could have access to active abilities.

In the champion points, you can put points toward light, medium or heavy, but you will only get the bonus if you have at least 5 of that type.

    Two main reasons:

    1. Armor Passives
    2. Undaunted Passive

    Mainly #1.

Lets say I'm a tank. So I put on 7 pcs of heavy. I have a ton of armor right? And I get all the cool health regen and block reduction passives, okay? Cool. That's a great build and has a ton of armor.

But lets say that my primary "stat" is magicka. If I replace two of those pieces with light, it's true. I've lost some armor. BUT. I've gained a nice mag regen bonus and a mag cost reduction bonus as well. For these folks, it's simply to help prop up a deficient skill stat that their "off" armor type helps boost.

The undaunted passive I speak of increase all max resource pools by 2% per armor type. So if i wear light and heavy, regardless of count, thats 4% across the board boost in all my resources, and 6% if you throw a medium piece on somewhere.

What i still don't get is when it says 5 pieces and FULL set bonus, surely full set means 7 pieces does it not? Otherwise it would state 5 pieces or more like it does for the other one in the tooltip. When people wear 5 pieces, they don't have access to the passive that requires you to have a full set equipped is that right? People say when wearing only 5 pieces, they get the FULL set bonus, but surely it only applies to the passive that asks for 5 pieces or more not the full set? I'm confused... How i see it, wearing only 5 pieces you miss out on one essential passive.

Why not wear full heavy armour or full light armour or full medium and gain the additional benefits from the extra 2 pieces?

My Magic Casters go 5 Light 2 Heavy as I almost double the Physical and Spell Resistance by going this route, but still get a nice boost from the 5 Piece Light Armor Passives

My Magic DK Tank goes 5 Heavy 2 Light to gain some Light Armor passives that help with casting, but relies on the benefits of 5 pieces of Heavy to survive.

My Night Blade on the other hand goes 7/7 in Medium Armor as those help with Stamina skills and resources.

So, it all depends on your build and what your doing with it.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Some of the tooltips haven't been updated or are simply wrong. Even when the tooltip only says "full set" it means 5 pieces.

So if i wear 5 pieces i get access to ALL of the armour's passives, including the one that states you need a full set equipped? (I don't mean one that states 5 or more) if that's the case, they seriously need to amend it as it's very, VERY misleading. All this time i avoided wearing the 2 heavy pieces on my sorcerer out of fear of losing the spell crit bonus from full light set, it is quite a big deal even. My gear combination has 2 crafted magnus pieces, which could've been heavy all this time to give me that essential hp and defense boost i really needed...

A setup I use often on my DK is 5 Heavy (usually whitestrakes) and 2 light. The 2 light come from the Warlock set so I can take advantage of the 5 piece heavy passives, and the little bit of magicka passives from the 2 pieces plus the actual set bonuses from the warlock pieces. Then I usually have a 2 piece set bonus either on sword and shield or I move around some of my whitestrakes pieces to weapons and grab a 2 piece undaunted monster helm/shoulders set. Just sort of depends what I'm doing.

Another reason is if you want to gain 2 full set bonuses so you might have a full 5 pc medium set giving you one bonus but also want to do a 2 pc heavy with 3 jewelry items to get another full set bouns - with some dropped sets the bonus might be more useful then the loss of 2/7ths of a passive...

low lvls = gaining XP in all 3 lines.
vet lvls = having all 3 lines already lvl'd up enough for the skill/passives to be unlocked and can use with 1 piece equipped.

Then when you get into crafting SET armor... you have to consider the stats you get for combining set pieces. For example, I wear two pieces of Torug, two pieces of Seducer and four pieces of Magnus which gives Magicka bonus, Magicka Recovery bonus, and Spell Damage bonus. More often than not, the bonus for 'five pieces' of a Set are not worth what you would otherwise get from mixing other Sets together. Also keep in mind that your 'weapon' is also part of a set, hence the reason for being able to have eight pieces.

And here I am waiting for jewelry crafting to have 5 pieces of whitestrake and 5 pieces if song of lamea ..... Then again that could also be a bad idea due to seducer and night mother or magnus and so on.

Well again I want it to have 2 craft set active whitestrake with the damage shield when below 30% health and son of lamea for damage to attacker and healing when fall below 30% health perfect combo. But again could back fire cause players could have some DSA or trails set or CoA helm/shoulder set with say seducer or pact or hunding rage active too or just a straight up seducer/magnus combo making there magic cost little to nothing
