Help with a pvp class

Hello everyone,
I am a brand new player to this game and I am having a ton of fun, I haven't had this much fun on an mmorpg in a long time. I have leveled up a NB to 8 and a sorcerer to 19. I am having a ton of fun on my sorcerer, but I played PvP last night and I seemed to fall back to my old MMORPG ways. I have always played a healer class or the class that doesn't die. I would rather be beneficial to my team in keeping them alive, rather than doing the killing.
I guess I am looking for a strong healer, but I don't want to be too limited to the healing because I enjoy switching it up from time to time. Maybe I just need to make two characters, but I would love to be able to stick with just one. There are so many options on builds in this game it is honestly a bit overwhelming at first, but I am slowly getting the hang of it.
What do you guys think about sorcerer healing and defense or should I maybe go with the class that has a designated healing tree?
