That speed buff in towns and slamming my face into walls!

Finally a thread about this! So often I'm speedrunning through towns although I don't want to, so I either run or I wait until that damn effect is finally over. But I don't see why I should wait just for those who want to run around in light speed, I want to play the game on my own pace, not theirs!

I also don't see why people use any kind of spells in towns in general besides of having an argument with a guard over a stolen item and you don't choose to flee. There's absolutely NO NEED to cast ANY spell in towns, this also includes Twilights which are everywhere and block both the sight and the click-radius of any interactable object or NPC.

So, yeah, thanks for bringing this to the forum, @AlienSlof :)

I'd like to say a big THANK YOU to those polite folks who replied here, especially those who were sticking up for me. It is very much appreciated in a forum which I know can be very toxic, even when something non-disruptive to other people's play is suggested. I have limited feeling in my left hand (my movement keys hand) since a stroke some years ago, and my fingers are not the dexterous digits they used to be in my old Quake-playing days! Sometimes my characters' movement can be a bit spazzy, even at slow speed!

    To OP,
we all have "quality of life" requests we like to make; I'm glad I read the thread because now I know why my character glows yellow sometimes and runs fast.
Some people have been very rude in the thread, some have been polite. The point many tried to make is this: make the request as you like, but you should have an understanding that if the request is only important to 100 players, the devs will attempt to handle a request that is important to 10,000 players first. I love this game, but wish there were a lot of things different about it. I'm realistic that almost anything I want in the game is never going to happen.

What you describe as a simple toggle sounds very simple, but you and I don't know the programming demands.
Most importantly, there is this: unintended consequences. What if the coding to create this toggle, for example, has an unforeseen result, such as all tree bark looking purple. So it isn't just the time to develop it, but also the time to deal with anything it might interact with weirdly in the coding.
I wish it were as simple as popping in that toggle for you; here's hoping you get it. In the meantime, the walk suggestion seemed pretty good to me.

I understand only too well your point - I'm a long-time game modder and understand just how easily a seemingly tiny tweak can cause a whole mess of things to go wrong! Been there, done that, so many times I can no longer count them! ;)

I agree with you that many things we would like will likely never happen, but it costs nothing to ask, and most people here have been understanding, seeing my dilemma even if the original request was itself of no interest. I've been modding Elder Scrolls games for over 10 years, but it's not an option in this one, or I would have already tried myself!

Not all of ESO's players are young and healthy, yet we oldies still enjoy this game just as much. This game keeps my brain active, and gives me something to do, especially as I'm retired now. Sometimes, though, some of us just need a little help to get the most out of the game!

My request was made in a light-hearted way, and I think most people 'got' that. I deal with it as best I can, using the walk toggle quite often. When my left hand is being particularly uncooperative, I just do writs and in-town stuff, where my character's life isn't threatened by a dodgy spazzing hand!

RIP Atherton, my beautiful little gentle friend. I will miss you forever. Without you I am a hollow shell.

Put it another way. If you were running through town to get to the bank and I buffed you to go slower, would you complain?

    The heck you would!

This is no different. We both like to control our own speed and not have it dictated by someone else who hasn't even bothered to ask us if we want to be buffed. They (and you) think they're doing us a favour, we're telling them (and you) that they're not.

He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". Perhaps a simple solution would be to allow you to cancel active buffs (not debuffs mind you) that show up in your character sheet. I'm sure some enterprising individual could then make a addon to auto cancel certain buffs.

Now this is a great idea, and would be useful in other situations besides unwanted applications of Rapid Maneuver.

Open character sheet right click temporary buff and it's gone. Not sure how to do it on console. This right here is the solution to your problem OP. No need to keep this silly thread going.

So there is a toggle choice in settings that prevents you from attacking innocents accidentally. Why can't there be a toggle choice that auto-removes buffs in towns, like the larger main towns, Mournhold, Belkarth, Rawklha, etc. (All the towns that you can zoom in on on the map)

I have no clue how programming works so wouldn't know whether this is possible or not but sounds like it would be helpful.

This blows my mind. When someone puts the speed buff on me I want to directly send them a letter and thank them. I used to have a "town" preset for my skills but now on console it's not as easy to do to switch skills in and out just for running through town. I'm not saying your opinion isn't valid by any means, I just don't see how someone can dislike getting from point A to point B faster.

Absolutely not attacking you personally, but I'm getting a little tired of "but there are more important things for the devs to work on" being used as a stock answer and sometimes an attempt to shut down discussion, every time someone asks for little convenience features/tweaks.

This. On that note, just as I think it's silly to shoot down UI features we've been asking for on the closed minded basis of "well I wouldn't use it" and "but they could be doing this other small thing instead!"... I support options, and this definitely falls under the same category as any other client side toggle that really only affects you, just like a minimap or nameplate options would. So yeah, I can't ever imagine using this option myself. But, I 100 percent support the idea, and the op frankly put forth not only a good gameplay reason (you could think of it the same way for role players), but also a great personal reason he would find it useful. It's not my decision, your decision or any other poster's decision ultimately whether it's added. If you have a reason you truly don't want to ever see it in game? Go for it! Otherwise... Why shoot down options that wouldn't really impact you, just because you wouldn't use them?

Well there are still abilities that make others draw their weapons or put bubbles around people, etc...If they are going to go out of their way (the devs) to make some sort of toggle they may as well make it a full blanket to be able to toggle "resist all buffs" from other players not in group, etc.. something along those lines.

Then it's on you to remember to turn it on when needed.

I'd have no problem with a blanket toggle (covering all abilities people spam), but I feel it would be a waste if they just focused on one of the more positive abilities (some people say thanks for the speed boost in towns when doing it, and when I don't have mine slotted I'm always happy to get that buff). Again, to each their own but if they are going to use time/resources on this, implement the option to cover ALL abilities that would other-wise buff, shield, etc.. other players and maybe make a "except when in group" box to check off.

I really, REALLY hate that AoE speed buff that people cast in towns so that they can zip about. OK, they want to zip around, but I don't. I like to bumble along at my own speed, then along comes someone casting the buff, whooosh, I end up with face meeting wall because I've suddenly gone from 'bumbling' to high speed! I like my own speed as my hands are partially disabled and I can't always react quickly enough to stop the 'wall in face' scenario!

What I am asking for here, is not to take away the ability for people to cast this in towns, but for something *I* can use, either a toggleable ward I can switch on for bumbling through towns, or a dispel, or something. Anything that would stop this being applied to my character. What is the great flaming hurry, anyway?

Just please let me have my slow speed just as they have their zipping about. Let us have the choice for it to be applied or not. As we ALL want, not just those casting the thing.

I usually switch to Walk when somebody casts that on my end while in a city to avoid faceplanting. I have it binded to Page Up and Auto Run as Page Down as they're both buttons on my mouse. :)

Everyones thoughts/wants/requests are relevant and some bullies need to hush up and let others be heard.

Well, tonight I had someone troll me with that move while thieving in Wayrest castle. They tried to time it so that the guard was still close, in fact it was obvious they had waited in the area to do just that to me. They sped off right after the cast. So yeah, let's get rid of it affecting others either out of group or in towns altogether. That's a decent bit of fun, I suppose, but I have already been caught thieving inside the castle once and know you can't escape. I handled it just fine, but if it isn't a pvp area, they shouldn't be able to affect you like that.

If the developers tried to keep everyone happy in this game, it would probably take forever to write the code.

By the same token, why do people buy a game these days and try to change the way others like to play? This speed buff is usually cast purely in order to buff people passing by rather than the caster who is often standing around thinking he's helping other players when he's actually annoying a fair few of them. It irritates me no end. What's really needed are visible buff icons so you can e.g. right-click on the icon and cancel the buff.

I myself have issues with some of the games mechanics, but I'm not about to start protesting for change, all I do is adapt to the environment and just get on with it. Just be grateful that when you press a button on the controller, it does pretty much what you just asked it to do, when I press buttons on the controller, it's usually random and out of my control, but I ain't about to stop playing just because I have Parkinson's, I am going down fighting, but in my case I am mostly going down out of control ;) I am just grateful that I am still gaming.

I hate that. Hate, hate, hate!

Sorry but it actually makes me laugh every time I cast Rapid Maneuver and nearby people are forced to draw their weapon lol and I have gotten used to it happening to me but the only time it bugs me to have it happen to me is when I'm trying out a look of some sort and drawing my weapon spoils my vantage perspective. As for Rapid Maneuver itself it is an Alliance War Skill so of course it will effect allies because it's meant to be used as a sort of rally the troops type of thing. Even better is it can be used while riding a mount without dismounting so it is actually 1 of my favorite skills!

By the way isn't it possible to simply go into the Character Menu and deactivate effects? I know you can do it with consumed food so try it with this next time someone uses it near you and you want it gone, although to be frank it isn't THAT long to just wait out.

...Still not sure why people are complaining about this. As if wanting to move slower is a great thing.

Maybe if you took a little time to read the posts of the people asking for this and considering the reasons they offer, you wouldn't be so unsure.

Well.. the only reason i read is that they want to go slower because going faster annoys them

Then you should read a little longer.

    I did..

Alls i see is slow pokes... wanting to be slow. Complaining about about going faster.

Seriously... how do you slam into the wall with your face anyways? Its not that fast...lol

No. You did not. Try again. You are far from the worst offender on this thread, but you're catching up.

    ..*facepalm.

    Ok smart guy.. Enlighten me.

Please.. quote me the post i sould be reading then.

Because i don't see the problem here... Going slow is not hard to do.. when speed buffed.

But saying im catch up to someone who hates going faster is pretty funny.

    The very first one:
    my hands are partially disabled

She goes on to further explain her physical issues in a later post.

PS: The offense I am talking about here is people such as yourself attacking a woman who asks for accommodations to her physical issues in a game she loves to play. You were hardly the worst person doing this, but you are catching up to THEM, not to her.

..She can just deal with it tho. Since its easy to deal with.

If controlling her speed when speed buffed is such an issue.. That issue is gonna be the least of her worries in this game.

Seriously.. Its not even a big deal. You just go a bit faster.

If controlling her speed is an issue... then how the hell does this person even stay alive in combat..let alone move around.

    I am amazed.

A person with physical issues proposes a simple suggestion, one that would affect the way other people play not one iota, and she is attacked and insulted by you and others.

She is just dealing with it. She would like to deal with it a little more. What's it to you? It would never affect you in the slightest. What's it to you?

    What's it to you?

(Hint: YOU COULD JUST SAY NOTHING.)

    Plot twist!

I have physical issues too with my HANDS. So i really don't care...what you think. Im not insulting HER. There is NO INSULT. Alls i said.. is deal with it. Just like i do. Fact is going a little faster is the least of anyones worry, even if you are handicapped in some way.

FACT is.. the speed boost does not make you that much faster. So here's a real hint.. just walk slower if you want to go SLOW. I was even laughing about this last night when i got speed boosted by another players, its NOT even that fast.
