Played the game for a few weeks, loving it so far and as all ES games, I wanted to create a powerful Sorcerer and follow it through to Vet levels and into pvp..

i reached level 38 and thought about my end-game skills and what would work best (So far i'm building my own tweaked 'ignition' build by deltia - tweaked to add my own personality on it) then i came across this thread... :-(

http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en-GB/discussion/153475/i-think-1-6-sorcerers-are-weak

So, apparently my Sorcerer will be great 1-50, then struggle in vet levels (even being kicked from party apparently) and be a free kill in pvp?

I know things in the game can change with patches, but at 38 i am not wanting to waste 50+ more hours to become the red-haired step child of classes as end-game...

Are things as bad as these people on the thread make out?

Eh. Sorcs may have their difficulties... but they have their strengths as well. Search the numerous threads of sorcerors escaping PvP death through bolt escape, frustrating people by casting shield after shield, or throwing out too many crystals for the other sides peace of mind... and other tricks.

True, pet play is suboptimal in some cases. But then, you don't really have to play your sorceror as pet summoner, do you?

Maybe if you are a min/maxer, you will forever have that niggling little voice telling you you could have a bit more DPS is you were a flamecaster dragonknight. Maybe you will always envy nightblades for their gankworthy sneak attacks (trust me, while that one is an advantage they have, I found in many other aspects they fall behind). And yes, maybe some people you'd like to run a dungeon with will be jerks enough to tell you off and invite some other DPS. In which case I'd say, reroll your "friends"...

The final question will always be: do -YOU- have -FUN- playing a sorceror? If yes, go ahead. I have a good deal of fun playing my two. If not, then you may want to think about rolling an alt and concentrating on that one for the forseeable future.

Sorcs are fine. I have a sorc that does rally well in PVP, sorcs in PVP are one of the hardest classes for me to kill on my non sorc toons. I sincerely do not understand why people always complain that sorcs are weak, they are not. They aren't OP either (though some skills could be reevaluated), but they aren't weak.

First of all there is often a lot of worried people on here when changes are announced.

Before 1.6 everybody thought the sky was falling as Sorcs were bottom of the pile & people thought they were being nerfed even harder... as the thread you linked.

But I can reassure you as a Sorc since beta... despite a few key major issues they're in a pretty ok place overall.

PvP - Magicka Sorc is arguably one of the top 2 or 3 combo's out there at the minute. Shield change in 2.1 wont make a huge difference due to the reduction in damage, but the bolt escape nerf is a problem.

PvE - Sorc tanks / healers are a bit lacking, but magicka DPS builds are in a pretty solid place... still a fair way off DK's.... but that doesn't look likely to ever change.

To sum up.... in PvP sorcs are very strong & def not a free kill. In PvE sorcs as ranged magicka DPS are also in a solid position and you def won't get kicked from most groups just because of this combo.

Wait & see what 2.1 brings & how it pans out... take everything with a pinch of salt until its released & has settled down. Hopefully some of the problems will be fixed in 2.1.... we just have to see.

The important thing.... If you enjoy your Sorc then keep playing it! :)

I don't know what you've read or who you've heard it from, but Sorcerers do just fine. I've watched a V9 Sorcerer solo the final bosses of some Craglorn quests. Bosses who literally one-shot my V14 NB.

the amazing thing about this game is the ability to completely drop most of your class skills and use weapon/world/guild skills as a basis of a kick butt character build.

There are still lots of untested builds out there with people jumping on the FoTM build because it works.

Sorcs are great, they have awesome mobility, the best shield capability in the game, a ranged execute that can be applied before execute range, pets are fun if a bit weak and crystal frags owns people.

Don't listen to the hatred coming from people who don't like change and only follow builds they find online.

Tl;dr really weigh the fun you have in game vs the business practices you are supporting.

You can't pull up a thread from several months ago and think it has anything to do with the game currently. As the game balance changes, builds go in and out of favor. Right now, Sorcerers are fine. Any Class is fine, just need to learn how to play that class to the best of their abilities.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

The nerf to nirn coming in update 7 is a huge buff for sorcs.

Sorc is the class that has the strongest affinity for shields, and shields don't benefit at all from mitigation, so the nerf to nirn means a huge damage buff for sorcs at the top end without any penalty to survivability.

DKs are going to benefit as well and the DK/dunmer/vamp/firemage synergy will be stronger than ever, but sorc is going to be higher up the totem pole in pvp than they are now next patch based on what we know.

All it takes is one small undisclosed change to mechanics or set bonus to completely change everything though, so it's really way too early to worry about what the FOTM will be next patch, and it's way too late to worry about what it is this patch.

Play what you want to play.

Don't worry, there's threads like that for each class. Except Dragonknight, at least, that I've seen.

My understanding is that sorc is one of the 2 most played classes at end game PvP. Somehow I doubt that would be the case if they sucked...

DKs, Sorcs, Templars, and NBs are simultaneously the best and worst classes at every role in every situation in this game depending on who you ask. Give no credence to any of it. Play the class and enjoy it and if you are good, dedicated, and geared, you will dominate most people with whichever class you pick.

My sorc is a lot of fun to play. She's still leveling, so I'm using different skills to see what I like best.

My main is a nightblade, but I think sorcs are pretty good. I like playing mine and I have a few friends who really enjoy playing their sorcs as well.

While DK's are probably highest on the pop-list, and Templars always seem to be present, most of the top groups tend to have at least one sorc around. With the exception of vet DSA every #1 group (both NA and EU) have at least one sorc in the group, and there are plenty of sorceres on the leaderboards as you go down the lists.

As the game balance changes, builds go in and out of favor. Right now, Sorcerers are fine. Any Class is fine, just need to learn how to play that class to the best of their abilities.

Particularly considering the thread that OP links specifically opens with a statement that it was a player's opinion based on poking around on the test server before the patch actually went live.

@LotusBladedancer try not to worry too much about older threads like that. When the update was on the PTS everyone went crazy and proclaimed that the sky was falling due to builds changing.

With current patches on Live, a skilled Sorcerer can trash groups in PvP -- players with experience with multiple classes often consider Magicka Sorcerer and Stamina Nightblade to be the two most powerful current 1vX Class builds to run.

In terms of PvE endgame, you may still encounter players who won't group you due to being a Sorcerer.
Those players need not define your game though.
