Are you that vain with your characters that you must dye new things immediately? I'm all for customizing my stuff but it's not a big deal to rock those ridiculous bright green pants til I get back to town.
Wait. .why can't you just go to one of the many dye stations? I'm okay with that idea but it just does not seen like something we really need at this moment.
I wanted the dyes themselves to be craft-able with the materials dropped from content. so a combination of materials got you different colours.

Yes, Devs, if you are lurking, focus on fixing bugs. NOT on adding new cosmetic things to the crown store. I dont want an ice cube horse. I would like to be able to be in Cyrodiil and not have a PR of 150+ at the entrance area with no battles nearby.
Going with the majority - this isn't a good idea at all.
To start off, I'm in first person view, so I can't see my armor. Then there's the whole crafting my own every even level, so I'm dyeing at the same time I create. As for the "better" stuff I generally find, I deconstruct it (unless it's much better than what I'm wearing). 20 points difference isn't enough for me change out, and so far, this has been rare. Most of the better stuff I find is armor/weapons I don't use.
But the final reason: no way am I giving up three slots for dyes when I can use that space for loot to break down. Leveling > coloring.
:P
An additional use for this concept would be for specific special Dye Kits to be sold exclusively in the Crown Store. Like maybe each Daedric Prince and Aedra could have their own paint scheme that could be bought in the Crown Store. Aedra could be all pretty and shimmery and daedera could have dark undertones. Effects like iridescence could be sold too....
I think the costume dye system, which ZOS just showed off in the live show is awesome - at least for ESO+ members. We basically can dye them like normal armor for no extra costs. All others need these special items to be able to do that and will have just a preset of colors with those available. Real freedom of dying comes with ESO+, I think that is a great new perk.
Thanks for resurrecting this @MornaBaine , and it's awesome to see what they are doing with Costume Dye Stamps, it's not exactly this concept.
This concept was pretty much suggesting a way for us to dye away from the dye station. The costume dye stamps are offering a very specific dye combination on costumes.
Not exactly the freedom I was looking for, but still cool!
