First off, this is NOT a hate thread. This is just my opinion on the current combat system for ESO: TU. If this has already come up, someone send link.
Anyways, I must ask the question why they didn't do the normal Elder Scrolls Style of combat? With the changes of Q being a weapon/ general spell wheel, and the numbers being item quickslots. I think this would have attracted the less open minded group of Elder Scrolls fans to play this game. It would also have added to the immersion for me. At the moment, There is just so much hype to get the top-tier items and armours, which I can understand, but having certain attacks able to be used with the push of a number key really killed it for me. I didn't think about any of this before, until I recently watched all the cinematic trailers in order. In "The Siege" you see the huge battle between the Daedra and the Ebonheart Pact. I thought to myself "That never happens in-game." to which the question came into my head.
"Why not?"
I realized that this is due to a number of reasons.
1: People being able to fly around (Teleports and speed buffs). We all have encountered that one guy, you know him. He teleports into your group, crashes 3 AoE attacks killing 6-8 of you, then teleports back out. When this is performed in less than 2 seconds, it can hardly be blamed as incompetence. And then, there is that guy you and your squad got cornered, but before you can finish him off, he is taking off at Sanic speeds, out of range in the first half a second, out of sight in the other half of the second. This raises the question "Why do skills like these even exist?" I would not consider convenience as the Elder Scrolls, for me at least, has never been about getting from point A to point B in the shortest time possible, but being able to get sidetracked by a scenic view, a random encounter, or something else of interest while trying to go from point A to point B.
2: Lock-on. I will not get onto the aura's around your targeted enemy (as this can be removed in the options menu) but I will talk about arrows, spells, and even melee automatically locking on to your enemy. From one who uses a bow, I would absolutely love having to arc my shots. Currently, this would not be practical (Refer to 1 and 3) but this feature really was, and still is, something I enjoy. There was no greater satisfaction in Skyrim then stalking my prey and delivering a well-aimed headshot at a couple hundred meters away.
3. Physical weapons. With the only damage output being numbers 1-5 on your keyboard, it would really be nice if we could actually use our weapons, and for them to actually be effective. Melee weapons should have range, armour piercing, bleed chance, things like that. Bows should have their normal attack, rather than be a machine gun speed, actually be useful. Lock-on (Refer to 2) should not be existant. It has, and never will be, a good factor in an Elder Scrolls game.
Can you imagine what this game would be like in PvP when you did battle with another player in melee combat? Or, grouping up with other Archers to fire volleys of arrows from the wall of a keep? A group of Sorcerers, advancing in a wall holding wards up? The combat system could have been so much more than "1, 3, 2, 5," it hurts me. There are many flaws in this system that I have presented, but think about this...
"What flaws are in the system we currently have?"
Cheers.
Outfit Slots are outrageously expensive. No, thank you.
