The Lady

As Eric Wrobel mentioned in the last ESO Live, the reporting team (BI) identified "The Lady" mundus as the most popular.

What generalizations or contemplations would you feel reasonably comfortable making about this type of information?

The first thing that came to my mind was... That most of the players are very casual (not the negative version) and may be why those who are not have so much brain damage over current state of the game combined with ZOS decisions (self included).

--> TLDR

For the purposes of this discussion let's assume that:
  • "Most popular" means 51% of ESOTU players.
  • 4% of the remaining 49% still have now clue or desire to optimize their build
  • 45% of the ESOTU population deliberately selects their mundus

Here's a pic for the visual ones )

I'm not really one for optimizing my build to the point that the hardcore PVP players do, but I do have a mundus stone the I intentionally chose for my build.

If I remember correctly, I think the lady is the first one you come across chronologically. So at any given point, if the majority of players are new, it is likely that they have this stone because they haven't come across the others.

Those idiots at zos didn't consider that every faction gets the lady stone first and doesn't see another Mundus stone for some time.

I bet most of the 51% switched to the Mundus Stone they intended for their character once they had access to it.

I agree lol. I guess ZOS doesn't really do research about their own game...

Or maybe it just means that a higher percentage of people use the Lady mundus. With 13 stones, it only takes 8% of the population to use the Lady to be considered most popular. This obviously only applies if every other stone is split evenly amongst the players. Just illustrating that "most popular" doesn't necessarily mean the majority of players.

Okay, so then why advertise a misleading statistic... if they knew, why bring it up at all?

The Lady is the first Mundus Stone you come across. Which means there's two very simple explanations that don't require insulting players intelligence:

    1) ZOS got their information by looking at how many times each stone is used and almost everyone uses The Lady on every character until they come across another stone (because any bonus is better than none), whereas later on they're more likely to choose the stone they want, which means the others are more evenly split.

    2) ZOS got their information by looking at how many characters are currently using each stone and low level characters outnumber high level ones with defined builds (or even ones that have progressed far enough to reach another stone). I suspect a lot of people make more than 1 character, play them a bit and then choose one or two to focus on and actually level.

Considering the number of complaints about vet level grind I don't think it's likely many people have large numbers of end-game characters.

It's most popular because it's the one that is nearest the starting point of the game in any faction.
People with 7x lvl 3 bank alts probably have this mundus stone on 7 characters.
They'll have given more thought to what they have on their main that has actually explored all the zones.

Possibly... For new alts, first thing I do is tele to a guild member in the zone that has the mundus I want and ride my slow mount completely naked to it, dieing several times until I get there.

Either because they thought it was interesting even with the obvious explanation (you'd be amazed what looks interesting when you've spent hours sifting through spreadsheets for identifiable trends), or because that's how statistics work - you use the ones that fit the point you want to make even if they're not completely accurate.

Note: I may be a bit cynical, I spent all day at work running stats for our quarterly reports.

Ah. Okay. I don't watch any of them. I don't know what they are nor do I care to listen to the developers. (No offense, just not my thing.) I was just responding based on the thread. I'm no genius, but it's not that hard to figure out that the first will be the most common. I don't see why this was missed initially.

You know, when commenting on an eso live video, you should probably have watched the video first.

He mentions that the reason the Lady is so popular is because of how early it's found. He mentions it as an example to explain what kinds of things they look into when deciding what needs to be balanced. He then transitioned into saying there were 3 particular mundus stones that were mathematically stronger than the others. The other mundus stones that don't fall into this category provided a very negligible bonus. So, instead nerfing everything into uselessness, they decided to buff the other 10 so people would have more options.

It doesn't mean the Lady was a 51% pick, it just means out of all 13 mundus stones, it has anywhere from a 7.7% to 100% going rate. My guess would put it at 10% - 15%. And I'm curious if ZOS's count included all alternate characters. My 2 level 10s have Lady.

Good point on ZOS including alts as many never get much further than their initial zone.

Obviously I don't know how they get their stats but I doubt they have an effective way of telling the difference between a main and an alternate character. Sure they probably could look at the highest level character on each account, or only characters over a certain level, but that's not necessarily an accurate way of doing it.

And if they just want to know which stones people use most often so they can determine whether they need balancing it's not necessary. I have 6 characters currently and I do consider one of them my main, but that doesn't mean I don't put thought into the other's builds or want a good choice of stones for them. (Well, except my mule.)
