friend/group/invite issue

so my friend just got the game and i can not play with him, we already have a group of 6ish players that play together daily and since he got the game he has no friends on his friends list and doesnt appear on ours...
also when i try to invite him by GT it says player doesnt exist with that name
he was appearing offline when he made his first one. but not anymore so im not sure if that would be an issue
