Why animations lack of detail on mmo

booker21

I know mmo are not meant for graphics and animations but I always hated the lack of detail on simple stuff like running or jumping. Mmo always feel really generic on this aspect. I'm wondering if these kind or things does impact the gpu/cpu resources that much.

Its part of the animation engine and would be extremely difficult to change. Would basically be like the biggest patch ever to improve it.

I get where you're coming from though.

Yeah ESO characters look a bit clunky(think Dwarvern Centurion running, if they could!) when running around, especially sprinting lol. It was one of the first things I noticed when I started playing and was disappointed initially but got over it; I'd still like to see it improved on though.

Saying this, the only MMOs that I felt done animations very well are FFXI/FFXIV. Square Enix seem to know what's up when it comes to making animation flow and look authentic.

It's easier for companies like square enix to animate cartoon characters when it comes to movement. Put any kind of realistic textures in and it's a lot harder. FF is pure cartoon.

You misunderstand, it's easier not because of textures but because the development team is most likely far more experienced at the animating and can probably put more resources into that side of development. It is ZOS first MMO after all and they are a relatively new studio.

I never had any problems with it. If your guy looks clunky its probably cause you but the muscle slider all the way and he looks some humanoid instead of more normally proportioned.

It´s not that. I have one character that is a skinny elf and he still run and sprint weird. It is just how the animation engine works. Most animation are well done and realistic but the running and sprinting is not and let´s not talk about the jumping lol. It looks much worst on this MMO where people dont´know what to do and they just jump. lol

Hilariously, they are better than Skyrim's animations.

Bethesda (not saying anything about ZOS, as I know they are entirely different teams) has a track record of making horrendous animations. Load up Oblivion or Skyrim and go jump, swim, ride a horse or attack things (read: wave your weapon back and forth in a manner that wouldn't phase a squirrel).

That said, I'm generally okay with the animations in ESO, but I do agree many of them are too glitchy/jumpy, and improvements here would be lovely.

I'm on PC but I guess clunky was a poor word choice, maybe "stiff" would be a better description around the upper back, shoulders and arms when sprinting. I can't really describe it better than that, it's like there's something subtle missing in the animation.

It's purely a physics engine 'thing' single player games like DA: Inquisition have that rag doll trip thing down, but mega servers computing that level of physics for a million people... you think Cyrodiil is laggy now, imagine if we all had those physics, the game would be un-playable ;)

that was actually my question is the animation could cause that amount of resousrce that almost all MMO are bad on basic animations compared to single player ones.

I´m not talking of rag n doll etc, i´m just talking of scripted animation like running or sprinting

Star wars galaxies used to have some of the best combat animations I've ever seen in an mmo, so the fact that the animations here suck is entirely due to lazy development.

I respectfully disagree. I really like the animations in this game.

Too many negative nancys about everything. Pick and choose what you are going to complain about. Don't just make it everything or you lose any credibility.
