In game use of Gamer Tags should not be used, Character names only.

you made a ridiculous, loaded poll question. Best possible solution is WE determine if we want character name@gamertag, or character name. There is no way my xbox friends are going to be able to recognize more than 3 of my character names, same for me. If you need your gamertag to be anonymous that badly, I'd suggest you might want to change your play style or behavior to not get people that upset with you.

ZOS already stated that because of Xbox Live policies, it's hard to implement this correctly.

We could see in the future character name and something like gamertag in smaller font size below, but don't expect character name only.

That's BS because I'm almost positive that Neverwinter didn't even display the gamertag names and that's a free MMO.

Neverwinter, if you want to be added to a Guild etc, they require Character Name@ Gamertag .. so it's still an identifier in that :-)

lol op wants to ERP as a chick lol and cant cause his gamertag is to manly

Even if that were to be true, what would be the problem in genders experiencing the other side? Some girls want to be manly men and some guys want to be dancing chicks, I mean it's as you said; a role-playing game.

It would indeed be frowned upon if this game was purely set-up to establish a real-life relationship through in-game contact swapping. But really, I purchased ESO, along with other people to fight the rotten undead, complete quests, traverse to the other side of Cyrodiil, unscathed or beaten - not to find that special someone IRL. (Maybe in game... with a ring of Mara).

But even then I don't want to get married in-game...

    ...I don't need anyone...

Yes. Yes neverwinter did. My toons name was Lyriss@(my gamertag).

So yea, still the same thing applies. Unless you want that in eso, then you'd be looking at Q'iam the Seer@exampleGamertag, which takes up 2x as much space.

At least check first if you're "almost positive" :) it'd take away that "almost" and prevent a wasted post ;)

Game needs to display account name because of factors such as guild membership by account name. 'nuff said.

If you still don't like it then make your account and character names identical. Problem solved.

Have you seen some of those names? Now how am I supposed to roleplay KillEverybodyonGentifex in ESO?

Sounds like a "you" problem to me. I don't role play as my gamertag, I role play as my khajiits name. Sorry that's too much effort for some.,

This should absolutely be implemented. Those arguing that one can still check the gamertag by looking at the players profile are missing the point that this takes some effort and probably won't be done all that often. The lack of character names is a big misstep and as it has been pointed out, other games have been able to show character names.

Guys. It is not a misstep, it is not a fault. The only thing it is is Not Allowed by Xbox live terms of service. I know you're like everyone else and just accepts without reading but don't start b*tching to game makers because you didn't read something you accepted. Take 10 minutes and go read Xbox live ToS. 'Less you wanna end up like Stan did in South Park for accepting iTunes ToS without reading...

Oh hush. It was a joke. I would never roleplay as my username. That wouldn't make any sense.

Gamertags can be checked and taken from Facebook, Any site that uses Gamertags etc

So it not showing in game is hardly likely to make a difference apart from some ppl feeling less embarresed about the GT they thought at the time was awesome lol

ha well I do remember being able to see character names but my memory is fuzzy, hence the "almost positive" :p

I just looked at an Xbox One gameplay video of someone walking through town and there's no @ gamertag under their character name when looking at other players...all that's displayed is their name, guild and level which is how ESO should be. I'm guessing the @ gamertag appears in menus when looking at them which is perfectly fine.

I prefer having my gamertag displayed, and id prefer that it be displayed on the leader boards as well. Most console games do this, and will continue to do so. If you want more privacy alter your settings, or go play on pc through a proxy and vpn. You will never have anonymity over xbox live other then choosing not to display your real name or playing in offline mode.

This is a great idea and I support the OP. I'm surprised this topic hasn't been raised before, one would assume it's something a lot of players would be eager for.

Funny that people should think I am concerned with stalkers, maybe I should clarify. I roleplay my Toon, the name is to me an aspect of that roleplay, when in a run I like to be referred to by my Toons name or abbreviation there off it is a part of the mmo experience. My real life is mine, I don't even agree or disagree with the assumptions of other players in regards to gender or age. I don't hide it though, afteral if you hear me speak in game I am pretty sure some of those silly questions about the real person behind the Toon will be answered.

Gamer Tags are all well and good, mine is anonymous in any case, there is no real detail and abreviated its quite good as an actual name "Midnight" has a nice ring to it. I have been in and around mmo's for many many years, Toon names don't make a game easier or in anyway even better, but they do enhance the playing experience.

I love how you worded the second option so much: "I don't care I like stalking Gamers using their Gamer Tags". Very passive agressive.

Is it really a big deal? I don't "stalk" people, but it makes it easier to keep track of someone if they have mulitple characters and it's easier to report when I can see their gamertag.
Being online is anonymous enough, I don't see the need to be even more so.

Mine are exactly the same... However, my gamertag is not capitlized and It does kinda bug me a little. Only because when speaking with people they don't realize it's a J and they call me iinobe" because I guess lower case j looks so close to an i.

The only foreseeable way I could imagine somebody stalking you based on something as simple as a gamertag is unless you pranced around the web saying something along the lines of "Hey my GT is c0dF4N141 but my real name, social, and address is Jimmy-John Sanders, 111-11-1111, from 1234 Margaritaville USA"

Furthermore, at this point if you want to ignore or block somebody GT or PSN ID is really the best option meaning as though nothing else would stop little johnny griefer from down the road from switching characters and piggybacking into your game. So honestly, at least on consoles removing GT's and PSN ID's seems like it'd be nothing if not detrimental to the community.
