I see from the patch notes the sound was upgraded. Dose anybody know the sampling rate music and sound effects are recorded in?

I doubt that was what was changed. They are always tweaking sounds and adding new ones and removing ones that sound bad.

As for the rate, probably standard CD quality. That gives the most compatibility.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Shame that they have to replace the whole archive and not just the sound files that are being changed...

Nestor when you write “standard CD quality” does this mean 44.1 kHz? The reason I ask is my DAC has a 8x symmetrical up-sampling and it sounds better if the base speaker system output frequency is set correctly.

The person to ask about this is @ZOS_BillMueller (probably via someone like @ZOS_GinaBruno) if you want an answer. They might also entertain it as a question for ESO Live, since the patch just updated a ton of audio stuff, if it was asked in that thread: forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/142023/eso-live-ask-us-anything

If it means they took out that "Red Diamond, Red Diamond" song, I'd count this as one of the top 5 patches of any game ever.

Without getting into the specifics of which sample rates are what, we did do some up sampling of certain assets. We deliver raw .wav files at 48k 16bit into the audio engine, which we then compress for file size reasons. The amount of compression varies depending on what the asset actually is, and we went through a pretty extensive process of finding certain sounds we wanted to have a higher sample rate, and certain sounds that could live with a lower sample rate. This helps with performance and file size, while making sure the sounds that are "important" have a higher fidelity over all.

tl:dr all assets are worked on at 48k 16bit, and then down sampled for performance and file size reasons. Though we did up sample a lot of assets in general. Hopefully that answers you a bit?
