Favorite Town

I'm wondering what people's favorite towns around Tamriel are, and why.

Personally, I am a fan of Velyn Harbor, in Malabal Tor in the Dominion. Three of the main stations are in the one pavilion, and the alchemy and enchanting tables, as well as the bank, are all a few steps away. I'm a crafter, so it's really nice to have everything be so convenient. I would prefer the Elden Root marketplace even more if it weren't for having to go all the way up into the tree to get there. Atmosphere-wise, though, I like the Guard just because it's on the beach with a nice view.

Shornhelm in Rivenspire. Everything is within 10 seconds of the wayshrine.

I will always love Davons watch... I just really like the layout of that town.

    Windhelm is stunning visually.

As a DC player, I was based in Shornhelm until around v4, mainly because of the layout: real crafting stations (not that chicken stuff with runes and herbs, but real manly crafting) within arm's reach of the bank and a wayhsrine around the corner.

Then, when I went through Reaper's March, I changed to Rawl'Kha. The layout is even more tight around there, good guild traders right next to the wayshrine and the bank, and a few steps off, there are lots of mudcrabs waiting to fill my soul gems.

Concerning atmosphere, I sometimes find myself wandering the streets of Rifton. The layout is good as well, but the wayshrine and the traders are a bit too far off for my taste. Still, I really like the view over that big lake and the climate is much healthier there.

It's little things that make the cities memorable or fun.

Well for convenience and ease of travel, Shornhelm. Except my orc is not so happy when Lorbash is ever so friendly to his breton wife, Fianna Kingsley.

If he tries something, Mol gro Durga will feed him face-first to his own forge.

In EP, In Windhelm, Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni loves riding her guar, Spot, through the flock of chickens between the alchemist's shop and the stables. He's an herbivore; he's not going to eat them, but he loves chasing them.
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

Shornhelm gets my vote for convenience. I like not having to run all over the city to craft.

For shopping and looting, the answer is Wayrest.

For nostalgia, Riften although I keep looking for the entrance to the Ratways as I know that the face sculpturer is there. (j/k. Damn it, we need a barber shop already!)
  • Karlsonation
From all over the Aldmeri Dominion, I still seem to travel back to Marbruk to do my crafting, cooking, armor customization, and selling. It definitely feels like the biggest city to me so far. I'm still only level 38 though; so, that may change if I find another place.

When i reached Grathwood for first time and went to Eldenroot with my friend we were amazed by it.
Unfortunatly the terrible layout of this city made me hate that city despite it looks :
    - wayshrine on bottom, gotta run trought doors for bank and crafting stations, you cant horse ride right to the wayshrine, the moment you get under tree you are dismounted

From the functionality point Rawlkha is best for me:
    - all crafting stations in open air, gtrader hub right next to wayshrine, all locations mount accesible, bank next to wayshrine
also, rawlkha has the famous bank rock where all the nekkid *** take place

I like Shornhelm for convenience, because I like that style of architecture, and because I like the way the town is divided between the upper city and the lower city (not that there's much reason to go into the upper city once you've completed the quests there).

For crafting, nothing beats Bal Foyen. If it had a stable, I'd park all my EP toons there. Riften is pretty good too.

For convenient horse-feeding/banking, Stormhold in EP, Shornhelm in DC and Rawlk'ha in AD.

Whoever designed Daggerfall and Wayrest hates crafters.

All main cities are convenient for shopping except for Shornhelm. The vendors are on the opposite side of town from the wayshrine.

Shadowfen is worse than Grahtwood. I hate both of them because of how similar they are. Hard to see anything when there is nothing but trees and swamp shading everything.

Crafting? Stormhaven in Shadowfen. Less of a crowd than Rawkla and I can make a loop doing all 6 of my crafting writs in about 10 minutes.

For hanging out, just about any city really.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Sentinel in the Alik'r Desert for me; really love the Redguard architecture against the clear blue sky, and even though the crafting, traders, and bank are a bit spaced out, the extra travel time after a long session of questing is welcome. The banker is also a merchant, which is either unique or one of the only ones.

It really has nothing to do with the setup per say, there are many great cities in Tamriel. Fact is the first time I discovered the town I just fell in love with it, it has an atmosphere about it that I connected to. Told my husband 'I just found the most beautiful city, you gotta see this!' He agreed :) It has been our 'home' ever since.

I've made most of my in-game friends hanging out at the Daggerfall fountain. I don't mind it for crafting, but by now, I know it pretty well. Winterhold with the drunken Nord fest going on is by far the best city to listen to NPC chatter. "You look like I need another drink!" has to be my absolute favorite NPC line. :)
