Thoughts on builds

As someone who comes from single/co-op High-Fantasy WRPGs exclusively (I have over 5K hours in to Skyrim), I have been trying to find a good build to play TESO with and eventually get involved in the MMO environment (something I've never done before) and I have a few thoughts. Remember that these are coming from a complete newb to this sort of game.

Sorcerer: It's a fine class, but I am finding it extremely weak on the single-player modes. Even with all the magic and effects, I find myself dieing regularly as I am getting rushed by multiple enemies and really can't deal out enough damage to protect myself, even with my Clanfeir. So that one is set aside for the time being until am more familiar with the game mechanics.

Templar: Pretty much your standard 2 handed or sword & board. It's fine, but not really my cup of tea.

Nightblade: Great class, but it seems like EVERYBODY is playing it. I really appreciate the skills available and the ability to absorb health when it's really needed. As I said, a great class, but no magic to speak of and sneaking just isn't the same as in Skyrim.

DragonKnight: This is the class I've finally settled on. I like the balance of melee and magic and absolutely love the Dragon Powers. I think it will be a good balance for my first full playthrough.

At the moment I have a redguard DragonKnight who dual wields maces and uses a bow sometimes. Seems to be working for me. Love the fire magic.

Do y'all have thoughts? And when would be a good time to start getting in to the MMO aspect. I figure, perhaps after level 15 when I can hold my own. Does that seem about right?

My only question about the MMO aspect is the communication thing. I notice that, when I have my headphones and mic on there is huge amounts of chatter going on. Can I narrow it down to just my team or do I need to join some sort of guild?

Also: I'm going to restart my DragonKnight tonight and am wondering which faction y'all think is best? I've started all three and really like the redguard side f things

Thanks for being patient. Just wanted some thoughts from the really good players.

Tactics are very important in this game. This means the skill rotations you use, the mobs you take on and in what order etc. A single player at low levels can really only handle 2 or 3 mobs at once. And, most of the 3 mobs groups will send a mob on a path out of aggro range. So you can take out the single, then go after the two.

Pick a skill rotation that builds off itself. In other words lead with a Crowd Control skill (like one that snares or stuns), then one that gives damage and makes the next attack more powerful or a Damage over Time attack, then hit them with your most powerful skill. Repeat this as necessary.

As for combat, you need to use mostly your skills, with weapon attacks being the filler between skills. This is because your weapon attacks don't do that much damage, but the time spent on them allow your stats to regen some so you can last longer in the battle. There is also Animation Canceling, but that is not as easy to do on the Consoles, if that is your platform.

Go all in on either Stamina or Magic as all damage scales from one of those two. Weapon damage is in there too, but Mag and Stam are the most important. This means all your attributes and glyphs and jewelery into one stat. Then your skills will really have power. Yes, your ignoring health, but if you play right, that is not an issue.

And, please, move around in battle, standing in once place is not the best tactic, you need to move around, learn how and when to block, how and when to dodge roll and most importantly, how to Interupt or Bash (either from a distance or up close).

    That should get you going.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Also, it seems you are leaning more towards stamina? Later on some of your spell morphs will support stamina. I recommend looking into those when they come up. Experiment with what works for you, you may stumble on something fun.
This one has an eloquent and well thought out response to tha... Ooh sweetroll!

Sorc: remember to have some stamina.. you can still block with a staff. blocking is a friend.. you can block normal enemy attacks and a lot of red wind up specials too.

headset: On consoles you can listen to 2 channels at a time, and have a mic active in 1.
You can turn off general area chat and just leave guild on, or guild and group etc.

General chat is based on distance. So i it is loud you can mute individual players, or just walk away.

The first group dungeon start in the teens, so 15 is an ok time to start LFG fro dungeons if you want. PVP, if that interests you, starts at level 10, but you can go into that any time after that.

As for your last question. Pick a faction you like. Just know that after you hit 50 you have a chance to play the other faction areas that are leveled up to post 50 difficulty, so you can see the whole game with 1 character.

You made a good choice. Just starting out, it's hard to go wrong with a DK. It's probably the easiest class to learn and make builds for.

Great insights! Thank you! Fortunately, I'm a HUGE fan of the dodge and roll tactic and always get out of their red attack circles long before the attack comes. Interesting that you would say to neglect health. I've always been one to try to balance the 3 depending on my build, but I'll have to remember your advice.

I wouldn't neglect health. It is a great backstop that helps you squeak by as a new player. You can respec it down later if you want.

Oh.. yeah.. I cannot stress this enough this enough ..food food FOOD FOOD FOOD. (or sometimes drink if you really know what you are doing).

Use it to really boost 1 stat until you can make blue stuff.. then I'd recommend new players to do blue health / your choice foods. The stat buff values are massive at low levels... and not shabby at high levels either.

You can eat food? I haven't even figured out how to actually take a potion from that damnable wheel yet.

    And food weighs so much!

It looks like I've got some "sperimentin' to do!

    Thanks for the tip.

You can turn off voice chat under the "social" tab on the pause menu and can talk with only your group under the same area. Build wise I think you're fine but don't worry so much about having the proper set up for PVP. PVP is way more about how you play than what you play. I just got 2 gold rewards for being in the top 2% of a veteran campaign as a level 10 to 29 over the last 2 weeks. My build is currently a heavy armor Templar using a destruction staff and a good half of my skill points are in crafting.

You use provisioning to make stuff out of those like 150 base items.

Go to a campfire you should get a prompt to use a lot of the time., or to the local inn kitchen or fireplace. recipes come out of containers you search and look kinda like scrolls. you can use them in inventory to memorize.

That is why I put in the caveat "if you play right" which in the case of a Sorcerer using Hardened Ward which you will come to love and have on your bar all the time. Until you unlock that, then you can use Boundless Storm for a shield (and offense) or keeping your distance and using Destructive Reach or crowd control to keep the mobs away from you. You are squishy, so you want to avoid attacks.

Perhaps during leveling you could go 3 points into Magic, 1 point into Health to gain some cushion. But later in the game, you will want as much Magic (or stamina if you build that way) as you can have. I think the PvP people like to have a min of 20,000 health end game, but with the buffs from being in Cyrodiil, that is not hard to get to with little to no attributes.

I never run out of Stamina, even having no points in that attribute, but the shields I run make it so I don't have to block as much.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.
