This is my first time playing elder scrolls and not even sure where to begin with crafting of any type. What is the point of it and how does it work? blacksmithing, woodworking, etc? Thanks

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

PakKat "Everything was going well, until I died"
Gary Gravestink "I am glad you died, I needed the help"

There is also some very helpful text in the game, both in the help section in the UI and in several in-game books that are strewn about near the crafting stations.

I wanted to make all professions on one toon, but if smart about it, you can have everything more quickly by delegating the trait tables among many toons, there must be the right math about it which i dont know, but i do know for me to get from 8th trait to 9th im still looking at 3 months plus my remaining trait time. I started in august on pc, trait time not optimal and i missed out on a few months too.

Also if u have 2 toons with blacksmith or woodworking or clothing or enchanting, they can craft peices for decon for the other toon, it yeilds best inspiration

To craft any item in ESO, you only need 2 things, a Style(Race) Stone and the type of material for that item. The style stone determines the look of the item. Styles are the same as Races, Altmer, Bosmer, Daedric, Etc. You have to obtain Style Motif's that teach you how to make other Races armor/weapons. These Motifs can be found in chests, dressers, nightstands as well as all Guild Stores. The material determines the item level, 1, 2, 4, 6 etc, items can only be made i even levels under Veteran Levels(except for Level 1).

You can add a trait to any item you craft as long as you've researched it. Each trait has a unique bonus to it that will be applied to armor/weapons you create. You have to research them in order to be able to make items with traits. Anyone can create generic armor without a trait. As you research the traits on each item the timers to complete it get longer and longer up to and longer than 30 days if you don't have skill points in Metallurgy(Smithing), Stitching(Clothing) and Carpentry(Woodworking). The best thing to do is if you don't want to work on these crafts at first, research any items you get with traits on them. The sooner you start with this the better off you will be when you want to craft.

Improving an item increases its value, armor rating or weapon damage. You can increase any white item into higher improvement levels if you have enough improvement material for it. The hierarchy goes White>Green>Blue>Purple>Gold, the higher the color, the better the item.

There are special crafting stations that give bonuses for the number of items you wear in that set. See the below link for all of the Crafting locations in ESO.
