Stealing is a really neat mechanic that few MMOs are willing to embrace. It's a minigame that encourages glad farming in a positive way and rewards folks that play stealthily. That being said, there are things that can be improved, outside of the long awaited release of the Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood.
- Different safe boxes & lock type based on the container we're opening: give factions some new lockboxes unique to their faction, let's drop making them generic. In addition let's update the lock picking cut to screens, make them unique to the chest we're opening
- Blackmail or turn in items to specific NPCs (gold/exp/bounty reduction): if you find specific items in different areas you can sellthem to a fence or turn them in to different NPCs for a chance for increased gold, experience, or reducing your bounty significantly. For example, if you steal a set of controband tools from the slave barracks in Kragenmoor, you could black mail the slaves to take the blame on your bounty, give them back for experience, or turn them into the slave owners for a reward. This method should have a risk if you repeat too much in an hour; they may refuse, call you a thief, or attack you.
- Unique armor sets found while stealing: Let's see some unique armors to improve our stealing skills without having to pve or pvp for it! Sets could include things like stealth detection reduction, less cost to sneak, or chances to go into steal when attack and low on health (for those times the gaurds are after you) these should be balanced with other game aspects of course, but give us more reason to steal armor instead of to break it down.
- Unique jewelry sets from pickpocketing: same as the prior, either with existing sets or its own sets, giving rewards to folks that steal.
- Radiant quests in outlaw outposts: Let's see some daily quests in the outlaw outposts to help folks level a little bit and to boost up their Thieving skills. These would involve stealing specific items, pick pocketing certain people, etc. For various rewards. I'm sure the Thieves Guild may have something like this, but would be at a smaller scale, like a Thieving crafting writ.
- Collections!: there are so many related yet unique items, it feels thrre should be some collections to strive for as an achievement.
- Group Heists: partner based breaking and entering senarios to steal money or good from a bank or some other instanced content. This is s bit of a pie in the sky idea that might be better with the Thieves Guild implementation, but I do hope some mechanics for a group of thieves are added in with major challenges to overcome.
So, keeping in mind that the Thieves Guild may hold its own improvements to stealing, what would you like to see added in the meantime or in addition to that?
*thanks to folks in stream last night that participated in the discussion to some of these suggestions as well*
