Random Guild Invite

Hello, folks!

I've played past Elder Scrolls games before - Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim - but this is my first foray into an MMO of any kind. I just picked this up for PS4 this past weekend, so I've only been playing for a few days. On the North American server.

I got a random Guild invite out of the blue from a stranger yesterday. Is that common or normal? I had not played or interacted with this person before, so I was a little bewildered by being "recruited" like that. I was not sure how to respond, so I tabled it for later.

For those with much more time and experience in MMOs, what would be your advice? Should I message the person and ask what their Guild is about before making a decision? Or is a random Guild invite a common thing and I should just accept it, see if I like it and the members, then decide to stay or leave?

Decline them. It's not a scam or anything, just annoying. But it happens all the time. It's a sign of likely poor guild management, and someone running it likely just wants to unlock various things, like a guild bank and tabards or something, but doesn't really care about you.

In this game, random guild invites seem to be more common than I've experienced in other games.

That said, I still personally find it incredibly rude, and completely unnecessary, for players to randomly invite to guilds.

Or, if you get really annoyed by them, you could always just join them, see if they have anything of value in their guild bank that you have permissions to take, and if so, grab as much as you can hold and then quit the guild. :)

I always decline. If someone can't be bothered talking to me to find out what kind of player I am then Im not sure I want to be in a guild full of other random unknowns.

Anyway I will always be a one guild gal.

since there is no text chat, hard to recruit since u cant post messages in zonechat, also had randoms throwing out invites
people are trying to get the required amount of members for tabbards and guild bank and such, so they just invite everybody they see

Oh, right... I forgot about consoles and their lack of a chat function...

I suppose random invites are going to be even more common there. LOL.

being the only GM of a guild in this thread so far...i think you shouldnt just quickly dismiss these invites. It is extremely difficult to recruit. You cannot search through the various guilds in the game, nor can you advertise your guild on anything but forums. There is no text chat, so if you want to get your guild growing to where it needs to be, you either come here, or sit in a populated area with your mic in area chat and hope for the best.

I have a guild jocked full of ESO pc players and I randomly invite anyone using a non-kinect mic. You should check them out and look for a few things before you so quickly dismiss every guild you come across.

    1. number of players - @ 50 players everything is unlocked.

    2. veteran ranked players - do they already have half the roster on vr14? if not how close is the average guild member to the VRs? Having a roster of active players is very very important.

    3. guild store - this is probably one of the most important parts. A good guild will keep an active hold of quality items passing between its players at cheap prices. Guild traders are a bonus to this, but in no way required. It is too early and the ones with the super expensive items are just letting them sit anyways. If they have a trader then you can expect higher prices since there is access to the store from the general population.

    4. guild chat - why join a guild that doesnt even talk to each other? a ratio of chatting users vs users online will tell you how much players enjoy a certain guild. This can be a good way to pick the brains of the leadership and its members. If yours GM/officers/other guild members know what they are talking about with ESO then the chances of the guild not being a total waste of time will drastically increase. You want a PvE or PvP guild? Go talk to them to see what they know. You can learn a lot about a person by the way they talk about the game. A GM who sucks at PvE cant tell you about Hell Ra, but he might tell you the best way to sneak into a enemy keep in Cyrodiil. While a GM might not know how to que for a campaign, he might be able to tell you how to get 11k score in DSA.

    5. Guild members alliances - is the guild a mix of the alliances or are the members all from one side? This can tell you quite a lot on how the guild is set up for the present and the future.

There's nothing technically wrong with guilds inviting random people, but in my opinion it does indicate that their entry requirements are likely to be "was in-game at some point in time" and therefore it's unlikely the guild members will have much/anything in common beyond being ESO players.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it can make it harder to get to know other members and to avoid ridiculous drama in guild chat.

I've been in some decent guilds that recruited this way, but I've had much better luck with going looking for one that suits me specifically.

Random guild invites are a pest you will never be able to extinguish in MMOs. Mostly they are combined with several other annoying behaviour like "heal/tank this and that instance for me"," Do me a favor", "help me to kill mob x in zone y", "Could you lend me some gold ?" etc.

The % chance of receiving a random guild invite increases if you are dressed like a tank or healer. The good thing in this game is...your dress says next to nothing about your build or role.

Just decline it and don't waste a thought about it, that you might have hurt somebody's feelings.

Cool, thanks for all the replies, folks. Helps give me a better idea of things.

Yeah, I can see how "recruiting" would be harder on console due to no text chat, but just being randomly hit up is a bit annoying. It would make more sense to me if we had at least played together or something to that effect.

Example: my second day in, I was wandering around the docks of Vulkhel Watch when I saw a fellow Khajiit get jumped by an Inheritance soldier. The player seemed a bit confused about what to do and just blocked and started taking some damage. He wasn't really fighting back. I felt bad and went in to help him fight the soldier off and we killed him together.

Shortly after that, I got a friend request from the player and a message of thanks and saying they were brand new and trying to figure things out. That was the sort of invite I had no trouble accepting immediately because we had shared a moment and I wouldn't mind grouping up with him in the future. Plus, I'd done him a solid so chances were he'd probably be willing to help me out sometime in the future.

So, if something like that happened - helping another player take down a big baddie or something - and they turned around and asked if I'd be interested in joining their Guild, that'd be the sort of thing I wouldn't give a second thought about before accepting.

I suppose it's more difficult to recruit on consoles but then again maybe not. I run a guild for PC and my invites or requests to join us come from 3 different methods:

    1. playing with someone in a group, finding out I think that person is fun etc and then asking if they are interested in the items my guild has to offer
    2. People going to the PC Forums, reading about us, applying on our site
    3. People being referred by other guild members and going to apply on the website

That's it. We don't spam in zone chats or randomly invite people etc. We have about 115 members of which we generally have 15-20 on during our typical play times. I wouldn't want to just invite people that don't mesh properly. Recruiting this way allows for Real members that can be pals with Very few issues.
So I suppose PC or Console, these methods would work the same. I don't know how many people come to the Console Recruitment forums but, I think it's still effective if you have a niche. Personally any random invites I get I report for spam and block the user. It's insanely annoying and impersonal IMO.
