Is there a point to becoming high level blacksmith?

I'm used to how Ultima Online worked (yes that long ago, but have played other MMO's) where GM black smiths made armor and their names would be attached to the armor/weapon to be able to sell on their vendors in there homes to players. What's the point in this game?

    Well....

The Armour or Weapons that drops from dungeon runs or from trials has traits that BS can't learn or make. Some argue that it is best, some don't, But you will not get a full set dropped to you in a short period of time. So you will need something to "fill in the gaps" with what you are wearing. That's where BS comes in.

Same thing can be applied to weapons.

Even if you decide at some point that you do not need/want any crafted sets, having maxed crafting lines on some of your characters is still great even if you want to upgrade your dropped sets to legendary. Plenty of good crafted end game gear still exists. Crafted gear was even more relevant before the piileof that was 1.6 but that is what mmos are.

Armor sets help a lot in this game you need at least one with 50 in all crafts. I make sets for my alts every other day hard to keep in mats for it but that's fun for me. Its up to you struggle though vet levels in drop stuff or fly through them in crafted sets. http://elderscrollsonline.wiki.fextralife.com/Sets

Absolutely. As time goes on and more crafted sets are added, finding someone who has researched all traits on every piece of armor and weapons will continue to be important.

Depending on how you define end game will depend on the benefit you get from BS. For me, it's PvP. With that in mind, your build and play style will also determine which sets or mix of sets you will use. Some of the best sets for certain builds and play styles are crafted.

I actually really enjoy blacksmithing in this game. Its not too complicated and pretty fun but thats just my opinion

Why pay others to craft things for you when you can do it yourself? There are enough skill points to craft AND be effective in combat. I don't see a reason not to craft in this game, tbh. Many builds use crafted sets, you won't always wear dropped gear - and you need to wear something before you can afford that gear.

So, did you all start crafting and adding to the skill points after you finished the story line, or do it all the way through leveling up? I'm only level 13, but the gear I've gotten so far seems pretty good.

I added a skill point every now and then. I kept the passive for "Ore Use" up equal to my gear use level and added other points in the other passives as I needed them.

The point to being a high level blacksmith is to be a high level blacksmith.

Yes, that does mean that you can create armour and weapons for your characters, or for other players in trade, and there are also dyes and achievements associated with the process but still... why not just do it?

Blacksmithing in this game is almost painfully easy, especially compared with other games or even Enchanting, my primary character got to 50 Blacksmithing without even noticing through Deconstruction and Trait research. The next down is at L38, again without putting in significant effort.

Perhaps a better question might be "Is there a point to not becoming a high level blacksmith?"

To which I would answer: No.

I'm asking on the technical side of it... I've never played a blacksmith character in an MMO, including Ultima Online so I don't know, I just knew what the point was in that game. I also played FFXIV, but never did it in that either. Thanks everyone.

as a side note, I just randomly looked on Ultima Online's website and saw it was still in business!!! Holy cow, I played that thing 16 years ago and loved it! They're releasing an add on for it as well! That about made my night.
