Why can't I send a message to my friend?

whenever I try to send a message it says player does not exist. The player does in fact exist and I have gotten his username straight from my friends list so I know it's not spelled wrong. He has been able to send messages to me. Help?

I have not experienced this as a glitch, however I have experienced this as my own error, for example my friends name has "pockets" in it... however he spells it like POCK3TS. So I have to change the "e" to a "3" and the "o" may or may not be a 0. I suggest you try sending someone else mail to see if it is a glitch on your end. if it isn't which I assume it isn't try changing the o's in his name to zeros or viceversa.
    Stop right there criminal scum!

    Hi @falcontalon141,

This is a known issue with friends lists between Xbox Live/PlayStation Network and the game Could you please try the troubleshooting steps below from our Support article about this?
MY FRIEND DOESN'T SHOW UP ON MY FRIEND'S LIST, AND I GET THE ERROR "CHARACTER DOES NOT EXIST" WHEN I TRY TO JOIN THEM. WHAT DO I DO?

Please note the following information when attempting to locate friends in The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited:
    1. The sync between the Xbox Live and PlayStation Network friends lists and ESOTU can take several hours to fully populate.
    2. Only friends who have logged into the same ESOTU console server will show up on the in-game friends list.
    3. Xbox One players must follow each other as mutual friends in order for them to show up on their respective in-game Friends list.

Players should also be aware that the Guild system in ESOTU provides the same social functionalities they may be looking to utilize the friends list for, including:
    • Display player's online status
    • Grouping
    • Travel-to-player
    • In-game mail

Our Development Team is aware of the delay in friends lists syncing and are looking into it. In the meantime, players who wish to circumvent the delay can do so using the following workaround:
    1. Remove the friend from their Xbox/PlayStation friends list
    2. Add the player through the ESOTU UI (Menu > Social > Friends)
    3. The friend now appears on the player's in-game friends list

Those steps do nothing to enable one to send messages to another. I have tried everything and everyone I try to send a message it tells me that person does not exist, with the exception of one person.
  • RivetGirl13
I've also been having this issue... I can send email and attachments to my friend but when he tries to send to me, it says I don't exist even though I show on his social>friends list... flustrating!

I've had the same issue occasionally with trying to mail gear sets to friends, as well. Don't forget that there's a trade ability, too. You can always travel to the player for free and end up at a near wayshrine if you're the same alliance. I'm sure the issue will be taken care of soon.

I know there's a trade ability but it's not helpful if friends are off line. I cannot mail anything to my friends because it always says player not found and it is frustrating because I have to store everything I want to give to them in my bank and I don't have enough bank space

Any news on getting the mail system fixed?

Hopefully they get this issue fixed soon. Have people that can't even get into a guild because of the problem.

I got this same error while trying to send mail to guild members. I was in guild and chose the user I wanted to send mail to and used the action to send mail but still received the same error. I tried typing it in also and tried using gamertag and character name with neither one working.

I recruited a bunch if members and was welcoming them and wanted to give them items to sell and half of them said no person with that name even though they were just added to my guild under the same gamertag.

I am also unable to send and mail, I can receive mail but no attachments. They are in my ESO friends list I highlight them press A, send mail, type the message and then go to send press A and get error there is no player with that name. Because of all the glitches in my game I did a hard restart today, so some advice would be great

I am also unable to send in-game mail to anyone. I get the error saying "Player does not exist".

I checked the known issues thread and there is a post that says this is due to spaces in a players GT. This isn't the case for me as none of my friends have spaces in their Gamertags.
  • Greywolf_McGrowler
I sure hope that they have this fixed in the next patch. I have lots of stuff I would like to give to friends that I can't meet up with due to our schedules being different as well as guild mates I need to give things too.

Still can't send anyone in-game mail.

    1. Tried using gamertag
    2. Tried using character name
    3. Tried going to friends list and selecting send mail so it auto-completes name
    4. Tried replying to a mail I received

None of those work. People can send me mail but I get an error saying "Player does not exist".

Still not able to receive emails from friends within the game... is this ever going to be fixed so we can share items???

I can send mail to all my friends, but none of them can send mail to me... One of my friend's deleted me from his friend list on Xbox, then added me to his friend list in ESO. He was able to send me mail immediately afterwards. However, the next time he logged in he was unable to send mail to me again!!! So the below is a temporary fix and not a permanent solution. I do not expect my friends to go through this 'band-aid' fix every time they want to send me mail.

What is being done to resolve this issue?!

We are still waiting on an update. There has been no communication on this issue since the patch, which obviously did not address it.

We are not asking for an immediate fix, but it would be nice to at least know what is going on.b
  • Greywolf_McGrowler
They say it's due to spaces in a players name though I don't have any spaces in my gametag name nor are there spaces in the names of those I'm trying to send mail too.

I am now having this issue as well. My friend decided to get a Xbox One and the game for his son so we could all play together. Here is breakdown of how/where his sons Gamertag shows up:

    1. His son is on my Friends list and vice versa through Xbox Live. His gamertag does not have any spaces. He is visible everytime he logs into Xbox Live. I can do party chat and send him message via Xbox Live messaging system. No Issues.
    2. His son shows up "IN GAME" on my friends list when he logs into the game. No issues.
    3. His son was also invited to my Guild and No Issues the game recognizing him and he is now in the guild.
    4. His son is also part of the groups I create and I use the in-game friends list and invite him to a group. No issues
    5. His son is able to join our group, we can chat using the in-game chat, we can trade, share quests etc. No issues
    6. I try to send him items or gold via in-game mail and the game says that he does not exist. **ISSUES**!!!

How can the game recognize him in EVERY other method, but when it comes it in-game mail it says that person does not exist?

Here is an update to my list above with not being able to send mail to someone that clearly is on every in-game list and on Xbox Live.

    7. The person that I CANNOT send mail too is able to send mail to me. How can the game say they don't exist, yet they are able to send mail to me????

    Come on ZOS....Fix this already.
