Why can't I send items to my friend?

whenever I try to send a message to my friend it says player does not exist when in fact I know he exist and I got the username straight from my friends list.

the message send format says gamertag but honestly i'm not even sure what that means since every character had to have a name during character creation. if you find your friend in game, you can hold start to interact with him and trade him some items. i had someone trade me some potions for a star metal.

you can trade in game. just sayin. incase you wanted to trade the item in half the time it took to make this post =P

I'm not sure if it is the ONLY way, but you can send mail to someone using their gamer tag (er, in my case, it was the persons PSN name).

Trading does not help if they're offline!

Sorry, if you still haven't figured out, there is a known issue with sending mail on the Xbox that seems connected to spaces in gamertags
