How to obtain weapon train gems?

What is the best way to obtain weapon trait gems? Currently I am looking for a ruby, however if I need to find any of them what would you suggest?

The most common sources of trait stones is from deconstructing items, refining raw materials, and hirelings. You can also get them from loot drops. If you want a Precise stone, deconstruct items with the Precise trait, etc. You can buy them in guild stores, though I think no NPC vendor sells them. They only sell racial stones.

They can also be found from Heavy Sacks that are lying around in the world. It's random though. You'll either end up getting get a trait stone, a rune, or a style item.

I've found loads by just searching absolutely everything....only thing I don't know is how you research them so you can actually use them!? Any help?

To research them you need to find an item with that trait, take it to the crafting station and select to research it (which will destroy the item).

Once the timer is up you'll be able to craft items of that type with that trait. To unlock the trait across all item types you need to find one of each item.

(For example a precise sword will only allow you to make precise swords, you also need to find a precise axe, mace, dagger etc. to apply that trait to all weapons.)
