If you spend a skill point in any of the "allows you to use the next lvl of matts" passive, like woodworking or metalworking, your daily writs will scale up to that level and will ask for items at that lvl range.
This means, for example, that if you are a lvl 10 char and you spend a skill point in woodworking, your daily writs will start asking you for oak lumber weapons. Oak is only available at lvl 16, and it means that you cant gather it until you lvl your char., and so you are unable to fulfill your daily writ.
Found that the hard way and now have to wait until i lvl up to be able to reap the writ bonuses

You don't have to wait, just spent some gold at a respec shrine.

Also noteworthy, if you want to power level a craft by deconstructing higher level gear, you actually WANT to spent those skill points as it allows you to extract more mats from deconstructing and you won't see that pesky warning about the item being above your crafting level.
