Why am I unable to use my staff sometimes?

SirGreenDay
This happens a lot.

Ill be in the middle of a fight and I go to use my staff and when I press RT, nothing happens, and my staff isn't even visible in my hands.

And sometimes when this happens, both of my characters hands have electric type glow to them.

I mostly use STORM CALLING skills.

I don't know if this a result of a skill I'm using, but I don't see anything in the skills descriptions that would cause this, but I could be wrong.

You might have Energy Overload active (an ultimate) which prevents you from using weapon (in this case, staff) skills. It is a toggle skill, therefore you can have it on and off as an ultimate as long as you have the require ultimate gained.

Btw, Energy Overload and its morph gives you a third set of action bar which you can utilise for any skills except weapon skills.

You have Overload still activated. (Storm calling Ultimate).

It's the only one you have to manually deactivate (even when you run out of Ultimate, you still have to 'turn it off.'

While it's active, any normal weapon attack or weapon skill will not function. All non-weapon based skills will though.

    Thank you.

Unlike the 3 juvenile idiots above you that act 12 yr olds, you were helpful. Its a shame, kids like those 2 are allowed to post comments like that.

The description says its active until "you run out or the ability is toggled off".

That makes it sound like it automatically shuts off once its current limit has been reached OR you turn it off manually, which makes sense. Why would it still be active after it's run out? Its just strange considering that its own description says that it runs out or can be deactivated manually.

Oh, well. It is, what it is.

    A couple followups.

I thought it increased your staffs light and heavy staff attacks. Since, the staff goes away, what powers is it affecting? Because when I use light or heavy attacks, when Overload is active, I don't see any actual attacks happening.

How do you deactivate? Then same way its activated?

    Thanks for your help.

Deactivate the same way you activated. It only auto deactivates if your ultimate hits 0, which rarely happens. You should be either throwing lightning balls with light attacks or spraying palpatine style with heavy attacks.

On the PC, skills and attacks don't fire until you release the key, not when you press it. Probably so the Heavy Attacks can be charged up. So, it could be the same on the console. If your pressing and holding the trigger, it may not trigger the attack, or trigger it as fast as if you release it.

I don't know if this is the case on the console, but try it and see just when the skill fires, on press, on release or somewhere in between.

Now, all that being said, there is an animation issue that pops up where you don't see the staff charging up for an attack, but it is still charging the Heavy. And, from time to time, it does seem that my staff just does not work.
Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Overload is it's own light/heavy attack. Light attacks are balls of lightning, and heavy attacks are a around melee range cone of lightning that is channeled (think the Emperor from Star Wars).

It's a rehash of what someone just said, but to make more sense of it, think of it as putting all your weapons away and you only use the attacks from Overload and any class/world based attacks.

    OK.

    You're explanation helped the most.

Just know thatvthe Ultimate has its own attacks, made it click for me.

And describing what the light and heavy attacks look like, was very helpful. I just hopped online and tried it, and I see exactly what your describing.

I've got 1 more Q since trying these attacks.

The heavy attack just looks like some tiny electrical bolts ,that dont extend very far. Do I have to touch the targets with these tendrils to do damage? That sort of defeats the purpose of being a sorcerer I would think.

The heavy attack of the ultimate Overload doesn't extend very far, It is only within the radius in front of you. The heavy attacks works very well within groups in front of you for an area of effect damage. The light attacks is great for range. Both attacks have its uses.

just to adress this idea really quick, the roles for your standard MMO are still in place in ESO (Tank, Mage, DPS, Healer) however HOW you build these roles, or rather how you build your characters to FIT the roles, are completely up to you.
There are melee sorcerers in Heavy Armor. Battlemages, if you will.
    Sorcerers can also tank.
    And heal.
It's all up to you
