Console: Please stop whining about text chat

Having no text chat is one of the best decisions they've ever made in this game. I can't begin to explain how much more fun I am having because I don't have to constantly type something somewhere.

I am a bit worried that all your whining about text chat will eventually lead to the devs adding it, just like all the whining about too hard content lead to nerfing the questing content difficulty so much, that is virtually unplayable now because it is way too easy to be enjoyable. That already killed part of the game I originally loved, I don't want to see another part go.

All they need to do is to improve the voice chat system and other parts of the game.
  • We need to be able to talk to individual people, from area, guilds, friends, group, etc.
  • In PVP we need a channel for all group leaders of the same campaign and faction.
  • It needs to be easier accessible, not buried down somewhere in the mists of the interface. For example it is more important to quickly switch between area and group channels than to cycle through your quests. They could replace that button mapping.
  • The option to turn off specific channels such as area chat for those who want to.
  • The dungeon finder needs to be placed MUCH more prominently.
  • We need a simpler grouping system, where you can advertise your group somehow (like with a nameplate that says "RECRUITING"), the option to send group invites to players who are already in a group, and the option to merge groups into bigger groups without having to dissolve the individual ones first.
  • We need a simpler trading system, for example one where players can just put up their wares at npcs to be sold to other players - much like the guild stores work now.
  • We need a guild listing, where guilds can advertise, so that it is easier for players to shop for guilds.
  • And much more.

    this is my post from another discussion what about this ? ;

Guys chatbox is a must for every game. Because there are deaf people and especially in EU everyone speak diffrent language most people know english but speaking and listening completly diffrent thing, english is not my native language too but its easy to type and read and understand for me, but speaking, pronunciation and listening is hard for people so most people dont wanna talk, they prefer typing and reading i was like that too. Also proximity voice is sux cos people trolling. And its not good for the atmosphere kids screaming, people talkin nonsense, playing music on background etc etc. No chat box option is so stupid.

I forgot to mention also in late hours people cant talk there are people in the house sleeping.
For example; me, my parents and sister working and their rooms next to mine room after 9-10 pm i cant talk. But im a pc player :)

It was you who said, what we "need", not him. His argument is more like "Just give us text chat". Yours is more like "We don't need text chat, you just have to improve a whole lot of things". That's what he wanted to point at.

And please show me a way to make RP in the MMORPG ESO. Maybe they should just rename it in MMOG ESO. Makes way more sence at the moment.

Ummm, yeah, I was playing yesterday for four hours, with chat turned on. (Guild and Area), at various times.

1 person said something in that time. Said two things actually.

    I couldn't understand him.

I also haven't seen anyone using speech bubble emotes.

You don't have to write a lot in text chat - most people use acronyms anyway - and if it used the PS4 on-screen keyboard at least, there would be suggestions to speed up typing.

Why would you constantly have to type something into an OPTIONAL text chat? Are you just that OCD that you simply can't avoid using something just because its there?

Help us to understand how something that's optional affects you in any way.

For example voice chat is optional, and even though its currently the only way to communicate, there are a lot of us that choose not to use it any way. Having voice chat available doesn't affect me in any way. I just choose not to use it. You could easily do the same with text chat.

All I know is that at least half of the console related threads are questions that could be answered in 5 seconds via zone chat.

How is less options EVER a bad thing? Especially another option to communicate....in an MMO...

So I am okay either way but to address your post:

All they need to do is to improve the voice chat system and other parts of the game.
We need to be able to talk to individual people, from area, guilds, friends, group, etc.
If you are happy with voice chat then why is private chat needed? go into Xbox Party chart or PS system chat instead that is where that should be not built into the game
In PVP we need a channel for all group leaders of the same campaign and faction.
I do agree with something like this but your problem is on console there is going to be alot of small group so what will voice chat be like for group leaders when 30/40/50 small groups of 2/3 people are running around PVP?
It needs to be easier accessible, not buried down somewhere in the mists of the interface. For example it is more important to quickly switch between area and group channels than to cycle through your quests. They could replace that button mapping.
The option to turn off specific channels such as area chat for those who want to.
Wow are you so far off on this one, quest cycle HAS to be a quick button as people are continually completing new quests especially at low levels, you need to be able to switch around without having to fumble through menus, what they need is an option for group+area chat to be on at the same time for you instead
The dungeon finder needs to be placed MUCH more prominently.
Not sure where you want it? Its right under grouping... like when you want to group.... to you know play the game with multiple people?
We need a simpler grouping system, where you can advertise your group somehow (like with a nameplate that says "RECRUITING"), the option to send group invites to players who are already in a group, and the option to merge groups into bigger groups without having to dissolve the individual ones first.
So you dont want text chat for posting this but you want someplace that has text in the game for posting about your guild? either text chat should be added for this or move this type of request to forums, with how many guilds there will be its not even like a guild finder would help
We need a simpler trading system, for example one where players can just put up their wares at npcs to be sold to other players - much like the guild stores work now.
you mean like an auction house
We need a guild listing, where guilds can advertise, so that it is easier for players to shop for guilds.
Again you are basically asking for text chat without asking for it, move this to a forum is the only solution. Only other option would be a guild recruiting center in towns where guild members could be talking about their guild with their voice
    And much more.
and you want more... just to replace text chat?

Again I am fine either way but people who support voice only need to realize there is some downsides. Its okay to say you accept that you can't do things as easily with voice chat only but you sure as heck can't say its easier to only have voice chat. After moving to play a little on EU servers last night due to NA downtime on Xbox I turned off area chat as the Europeans seemed too talkative in a non-constructive way. On the NA server I haven't really noticed anyone using voice chat actively.

Also lets say tank left middle of the dungeon and you need a tank asap are you going to take queue and sit and wait for long time ?Or are you going to go to town and approach people 1 by 1 and say hey are you tank wanna join us ? well good luck with that !!! but with chat box you can announce to whole damn map. Not for dungeons lets say you found a skull or dolmen while questing and there is noone around are you going to run back to town and ask to people i need someone for skull or dolmen. Having no chat box is too STUPID guys in every way.

    Just a few answers:
    • Private Chat: You come online, your friends are already on in Cyro and you want to join them. But you can't group with them because they are already grouped up. So open a private channel to your buddy and ask him to inv you to their group.
    • Quest Cycle: Best solution would be to allow the user the option to choose between a) quest tracker and quest cycle button and b) minimap and voice channel switching. One is better for questing, the other better for pvp.
    • Dungeon Finder: Fact: Most new players simply don't find it. Plus, it's one of the central aspects of the game and should thus govern the menu much as your attirbute bars govern the hud.
    • Trading System: No, not an auction house. The devs don't want an auction house, and they have valid arguments. I am proposing a better solution above.

As to the other points: Yes, a chat box solves a lot of issues, but not in an elegant way. What most people don't understand is that there is no inherent need for a chat box in this kind of game. There is a need for specific features to solve specific problems. Most people are just so used to having these problems fixed with a chat box, that they don't realise any more that that's not the best way to do it. It's the same kind of people that use Microsoft Word for every single text related job, be it writing an essay, a shopping list, a novel or birthday invitation. Word is not good at doing any of these things and for each of those problems there is a better application out there. It's the same with the chat box. Good interface designers don't look at the status quo and copy it, they look at the problem and find the best possible solution for it.

For me the chat box is a measuring stick. As long as you still need one and people are still asking for it, your interface is not as good as it should be. But that doesn't mean that adding a chat box will make it better. It will just sweep the problems of the interface under the rug.

Some of these things are already in the game. Voice chat is immediately accessible from the options. Also, individual chat channels can be turned on and off.

They definitely need a guild listing where players can sign up for an invite right on the UI. The PC has needed this for a year now and the console needs it 10x more.

They seem to have put all of the eggs into the looking for group function, to the exclusion of less formal groups. There is no way to see if anyone wants to help out at a dark anchor, you just need to hope someone shows. Grouping in Cyrodiil is inhibited by a lack of a zone wide way to establish groups.

Speaking of removing zone-wide communication, it is impossible to organize and inform people in Cyrodiil. Right now, Cyrodiil behaves like an uncoordinated group of solo players. It will be interesting to find out whether players can adapt, whether it will be required to be in guilds active in the Campaign just to be relevant, or if people will give up and just be solo players.

Voice chat for me, so far, has consisted of someone yelling at a sibling, a number of people with upper respiratory problems, and one guy who apparently sings while crafting. No speech has been fully intelligible, yet. Someone did impress me by standing next to me and saying something. I wish I knew what they said.

The idea is right, but in practice it is not impressing me.

To me the text box is the most elegant way. One tool eliminates many problems. Rather than 10 tools for 10 problems. The only way your suggestions work is if the tools are faster and/or easier than just using a text box.

Text box works so well for identifying:

    -who the person is
    -what chat they are in
    -understanding them the first time
    -scrolling back to review conversations
-right click menu for adding them to whatever, ignoring, friending, grouping, etc...
-private conversations without having to switch channels (super cumbersome)

Voice chat will never be able to be as elegant as the chat box for all of these things.

Voice chat is way more effective at getting information across fast, especially in a group setting, and for casual fun/goofing around with friends.

Both text and voice are required/desired in an mmo setting, and trying to stuff a square peg in a round hole, or a round peg in a square hole will meet with the exact results we are seeing today.

Agreed! Here's my comment about it.

Every damn PS4 comes with an earbud, TURN IT ON! I promise we won't make fun of your voice. Damn unsocial ass Playstation gamers. Don't try and do a dungeon or party with me if no voice chat, yes, people are starting to get kicked out of groups because of it and I hope that continues!
