It is possible to kill without fire however takes more time tho. Think my first time with him I killed without fire. Fire just makes the fight so much easier.
Ok. I thought that the questline's point was to find a way to harm him and he was supposed to be immune to damage until you kite him to the fire or do some fire damage with your skills.
