can't craft

orpheus148
Can someone help me out? I can't craft anything but I have the mats to do so. Im only level 4 so I don't understand why the lowest level gear is red. Do you need something besides jute to craft low level gear?

You need to refine the jute (need a stack of 10 to refine it), as well you will need a racial style stone that matches the racial styles you know. This will start out as only your own racial style. If you want, I do have a series of crafting guides - these were made on PC but the actual mechanics of crafting will be the same, just the butons/UI will be different.

[EDIT] And now that I think about it.. I can't remember FOR SURE.. but maybe crafted items start at level 6? If it's showing red on your crafting UI though, that SHOULD mean you can't make it, although be careful of what level you are making the item. Trait stones can also be used, but you must first research items to be able to add those.

Yes, you need the base style mats for your race or any other race motif you have already unlocked.

For example, as a Bosmer, you will need Bone to craft anything in the Bosmer style.

While we're at it, SirAndy thanks for the example, couldn't pull a match with correct spelling out of my head at the moment lol

To unlock more racial styles, you need to purchase (from either the crown store or guild store/another player) OR find a racial motif book. Once you find a racial motif book, you may "use" it, and that character will consume it. ONLY that character will be able to craft that racial style. Each racial style has a different stone needed, and each character needs to learn the motifs (they do not unlock for the account).

Dwemer is a different story.. but at level 6 you don't need to worry about that one yet

I have made L1 stuff before. I have a complete set of Exploration Traited gear at L1, and a complete set of Training Traited Gear at L4, all improved to Blue. All my new characters use this. It's quite smelly now, but it gets them going out of the gate.

As for Crafted Sets that you do at the special crafting stations, you won't get all the bonuses at low levels, but you get some of them.

There are two areas of Red on the UI. One is on the Level of the gear being made. You can make gear that is above your level, you just can't wear it. That is how my VR1 Crafting Alt made things for my VR12.

Then the Race or Trait you can select might be in Red. That means you either don't know the trait or don't have the Trait gem to make it. The UI should tell you which. I think the Racials just don't show up at all unless you learn them.

Enjoy the game, life is what you really want to be worried about.

Correct, but if you do know them (and you always know your own race style) but you don't have the race style material, the style will be red.

If you only know one style (the default after you start the game) and you don't have any style mats, you can NOT craft anything, even if you have enough *refined* mats (jute, iron ingots, sanded maple) ...
