You can take the Keen Eye passive to highlight nodes. Other than that, just look around trees. I'm not sure why only one resource would be scarce - I expected them all to be during launch week...

Wood, no matter at what level, is always more scarce than other resources (cloth and metal). Simply because there are less items craftable in woodworking and they're only for two gear slots (weapon and shield) while metal and clothing are for 7 gear slots (even nine for metal, assuming someone uses ambidextry + heavy armor).

Another thing that will help is to deconstruct woodwork materials. Sometimes you may not get anything from it but it will slowly increase your skill line.

Just look by trees, rivers banks, lake/ocean fronts etc. There's always tons there.

I recall when I first started, Maple was one of the hardest ones to see, I guess it's the moss on it, kinda like camo.
Pointing a point into Keen Eye will help you a lot with that.

Look for areas with no standing maple trees.

On a more serious note, it just takes time to train your eye to see the material nodes. I find it easier to spot them without the passive that highlights them.

As well, you will most likely find they are hard to get right now due to them being overfarmed. Once everyone starts to level up and spread out throughout the zones it should be easier to find resource nodes. I remember at PC launch having a hard time finding resource nodes for like a month - even with Keen eye - was just a lot of people harvesting

Maple is on 'driftwood' type logs on the ground, NOT from actual alive trees. Maple logs appear grayish-striped, usually with moss.

"Keen Eye" really helps with all types of resource nodes! You won't believe how much you're missing until you spent some skill points in keen eye. I have level 1 of it on all my chars for all types of resources.

Honestly with the number of low level maple staffs, bows, and shields I have seen dropping I would say a much better use of your time would just be leveling and then deconstructing the various drops you get. They sell for so little (if any) gold and the time saved is a big factor for me personally. True you don't always get materials, but if you keep bag space and watch out for those items you can get a lot of material without tons of effort. Also keep an eye out in dungeons for tables and racks with staffs and shields to grab. Seems to be a fair number spread around.

Is the other wood options come later or are they in the start islands? Maple seems like the basic creating items I want some of the other stuff.

You won't find Oak until the second major zone, and you can sometimes find the next level there as well (Birch, I think). You can't make anything from Oak until you put a point in the woodworking passive that allows you to make items with higher level materials. And, you can't use an oak staff/shield/bow until you're at least character level 16 (Oak makes lvl 16-24 items), so until you're at that level, you don't really need the materials.

I don't have it on any of my chars because the glow is annoying and unimmersive. But if it helps someone... :)

If you need to do some hardcore node farming for an hour or two, just turn off grass in video settings.

You'll lose some immersion for a while but anything still on the ground is going to be really easy to distinguish.

Then just turn it back on when you want to get back to enjoying the scenery while questing.

I seem to find them next to trees that look like baby palm trees. I think they're yuka trees. It's strange, but that's where I always find them.

I noticed yesterday on PS4 console the resources seem to respawn after a relatively short period of time, so if you find several logs you wish to harvest make a path of it and farm monsters in between respawn times. Worked for me and I was able to get about 60 oak logs in in short time
