As it is for me on the PS4, I don't want people swearing their heads off over my speaker system in my living room, so I have to leave area chat off.
Voice chat is great for grouping. But it doesn't work good enough for certain other scenarios.
Immersed in the game, listening to a quest giver, only to have what they say completely drowned out by someone shouting to their spouse is not fun for me and is far far far more annoying that spam in a chat box.
Being still in the house at the end of the prison starter quest in DC and hearing someone shouting about how on earth they pay a bounty, when they aren't even in the house but outside, again spoils immersion.
I'm not asking to replace voice, I'm asking for three things.
1) an option to auto disable area voice when talking to npc's.
2) custom chat wheel text
3) Text chat that's optional for those that want it.

Chat windows are annoying and definitely imo, not necessary on consoles. That's why there is big business in headsets for consoles. PC has chat boxes.2 -

There's big business in pc headsets too, I have been a PC gamer since forever, as soon as online gaming became possible, I used voice chat and every online PC game I play, I use and enjoy voice chat whether mumble, team speak or whatever.
However I use them for just my friends or the group I'm in, I would never want every random player talking.
I also very often have text chat disabled on PC games, but sometimes it's needed like when I used to raid with a deaf player on Lotro
I've had consoles (almost all of them) since the 80s. The idea that I and many others are set in our PC ways and dont understand the difference is laughable. Most of us have console gamed for years including MMO's

USB keyboard. Both PS4 and XB1 accept them natively.
Like Im said already....this is uncimfortable compare to chatpad, why? Because with keyboard or smartglass u need already at least TWO devices, so its takes much more time to take keyboard, take away gamepad, type, put back keyboard, bring back gamepad, etc. With chatpad its ONE device, so u just need typing, very simpel and comfortable1 -

If chat comes to console, people will demand others using it. Imagine a guild or a dungeon group where half the players have the chat off and using voice communication, and the other half have the voice off and using chat.
Realistically, if they add chat in the game, there wont be a choice of using it or not. So the realistic option is to chose between chat or no chat..there is no middle ground on this.
For me the dilemma is, if i want to lay back and play the game with just my controller or if i must have a keyboard next to me and constantly switching between the two while gaming. I chose not to.Edited by Earelith on June 10, 2015 9:22AM1 -

I just want to be able to have a chat box (like I do on other PS4 games), where I can enter short phrases via my PS4 controller in a few secs, when needed.
I have no intention of using a keyboard either
The area chat is simply too intrusive with voice for me, hence will always be turned off.,
On the PC, I NEVER do group stuff without voice and haven't for years, so personally I don't see that as a big problem, just make sure yo join a guild that wants to use voice for such activities.

Most of us new console players couldnt even get into the fourms till 12 hours or so ago lest for me. I hate being ninja invited..send me a /whisper and ask if im free.. I also have many items i don't wanna selll on the brokker i wanna unload fast or in bulk..Not being able to type in chat hey boss x is up who wants in ..or ask a question is just insane..
This whole well we dont want you sittin on the couch trying to use a keyboard is silly..I played another ps mmo thats on pc..that has both text and voice in game..was not hard and i never used a keyboard once..only my controller the same way we send mail in game in eso..its 2015 auto fill is a wonderfull thing lol
But the funniest part to me is you wont let us have text chat...Yet we don't have voice mail we have to type it out .....
Just wait the more people check there mail and spread the word this fourm will light up with a ton of new accounts and just like prelaunch the polls will be maijorly wanting text chat1 -

✭✭✭✭Yes, but not an urgency.Guild Recruiting is going to be a pain in the a** without some text input option to communicate. Some people do not have Mics and it will become obnoxious for people to back out of the game. Find a players name in PSN and then send them a message about wanting to join. Same issue with Mail in Game. Either option is more effort then needs to be put forth for what is an MMO feature found on PC but not on PS4/XB1.

I don't go for the big 500 member guilds, I'm a one guild person that likes to get to know my guild members and be sociable.
If I'm in group voice and a guild member logs in, being able to quickly type "hey xyz" into chat is much better than the total silence they will currently get.
And I sill believe it's really needed for PvP, the communication between different groups there in my opinion is essential.

Naxaris✭Yes, it should be a priority to add it ASAP.Please consider adding a text chatbox. There are so many problems with not having one. Only having voice chat can be a pain, especially for an mmorpg.
They're are people who are hearing impaired who wont be able to communicate during group content.
Proximity chat can be a pain sometimes, you hear frequency from peoples mic's, everyone talking at once, people yelling racial, disrespectful terms, etc.
If we don't want to use the group finder for dungeons/trials and we actually wanna find people through the chatbox, we cant. Were left with going into group finder and hoping everyone actually goes the roles they picked and doesn't just troll.
Maybe we want to put stuff in the trade channel in chat, some of us dont want to be forced to use a guild store for that.
The list goes on, so please, consider adding a text based chatbox.
