What are you trying to do? Add them to your friends list? You know that you need to use the gamertag?

Again, would be helpfull if you try to tell us what you try to do. Joining? Are you trying to do a dungeon with them or what?

People...on consoles the "join" feature is as described by the OP.
They are not in the game. For example, if on Xbox One, I'll notice a friend playing a game. The console allows me to choose "join" to play with that person, however in this specific game its not joining us to the player.

What should occur is this..."join" should either party chat or group chat and load us up into the game (as long as the character alliances are the same). I'd would obviously load the joining player wherever they logged into last and then auto teleport that character to the player that's being joined. (Maybe a prompt before teleporting) but that's the logic and the OP's question.

For me "join" has been greyed out.

Please, which desciption? Would it be so hard to write something like "I'm at the dashboard, and after clicking on join I get this message"? That's a description.

Sorry, mind reading isn't common around here.

The topic "join friends on console Xbox one" was self explanatory.
The topic did not suggest the OP couldn't group with a friend or find a friend in-game.

Could it be that it's just not possible to use the console's own "join" option? There may be too many variables involved in logging your character in, finding out where friends are, whether they are accessible, porting to them if so, and all that stuff, straight from the dashboard.

Yup, there's no way ZOS could have tested that function. They were too busy with adding items to the cash shop.

The adding friends is a pain. Only way it would let us do it is by actually interacting with the player. Another problem is if you are grouped, there is no way if keeping track of your group as they do not show up on the compass. Only one that shows is the crown on the group leader. If there is way to change it, I cannot find it. Tired if having to stop and open the map just to find where my group has run off to. Hope they fix this.

I've found the work around for this as it happened to me last night......

Simply go to your friend/friends on your Xbox One while you have ESO launched in the background (Doesnt have to be snapped) and change the friendship status, remove your friend/friends from your friends list and get them to do the same, once you have done this re-add them again and get the to do the same again, go back into the game and then within a few seconds they should now appear under the social and friends tab in ESO.

Once your friend appears in the friends tab you can create a group from there or travel straight to them, hope this helps.

Party chat. then join group, if that doesn't work manually invite them under ESO friend's. You shouldn't have a big problem if you are in a party together

This seems to be a bug. A friend and I had this problem the other night. He had to restart his PS4 so that we could actually get into a group with each other.

Remember if you do not use the console in the title of the thread, you will find things are less clear. If you are an xbox 1 user who might actually be able to help them with the problem it is indeed very clearly expressed.

The OP means in-game when you bring up the social option you can see friends from your friend list who are also playing ESO and you are supposed to be able to join them. Currently it doesn't seem to be working. I had 5 friends playing last night (same faction) and non were showing up on my list

And for argument sake "join" them even if they are just standing around in a store to go quest together

Thanks a ton! This worked for me.
