Couple of noobish questions, been away

stairwaytwoheavenb16_ESO
Stopped playing a couple moths after release but coming back for console version and been reading some posts, have questions.

1) Once I hit level 50 in blacksmithing for example, can i craft VR level gear? Or is there VR leveling for crafting as well?

2) I see there are "writes" now. From my understanding they are crafting quests. If your level 50 and do a "writ" what xp can you get? Would that xp be for your characters leveling? And again, if you have a VR14 (max from what i understand) and a level 50 crafter in that craft, then would "writs" be useless?

thanks : )

The decisive value for being able to craft veteran gear is not your crafting skill but the first passive in the crafting skill lines: metalworking, tailoring, and woodworking. Basically, you need to be able to process the kind of metal that is used for the level you want to craft for. If, e.g., you want to craft a v14 sword you have to process void steal. However, to unlock the different levels of that skill, you need to level your overall crafting skill. Not sure about the exact number, but somewhere at around level 40 you should be able to invest the last skill point in, e.g., metalworking and thus be able to craft v14 gear.

If you turn in the items to complete a crafting writ, you'll get some decent amount of crafting XP and a little bit of "raw" XP. (At v14 you get about 500 XP.) So, if you're v14 and your crafting skill is on 50, you probably will not want to do those writs for the XP. However, you get a box of random rewards upon completing a writ. That box can contain, e.g., rare recipes for the provisioner, rare tempers, or some sort of traesure map that will lead you to a place with lots of rich ressource nodes. There, you have a tiny option to carve the much wanted nirncrux. So, crafting writs are not useless, even if you're maxed out in all respects.

@stairwaytwoheavenb16_ESO, just to note that there's no point skilling up a craft beyond 40, which is when you unlock the final perk, the extra 10 crafting level give no payback at all, apart from the sense of 'completing' it; which I've done 5/6 and am 49/50 of the sixth, so I too persue worthless 'achievements' :).

IIRC, the last Research Passive, the one that limits research to 30 days or less is unlocked sometime in the 40's for the Equipment Crafting (L45 in Blacksmithing for instance). This was added with Nirnhorned. But, other than that, everything you need to craft is unlocked by L40 in each line.

This is not true for all crafts. Provisioning & Alchemy require level 50 to unlock all passives to reach max crafted item level.

Also to make max crafted items one key passive must be maxed out (ie.Blacksmithing = Metalworking 9, Clothier = Tailoring 9...)

Thanks for the info. I currently have 45 smithing and 40is in both cloth and woodworking. Nice to know i can max out gear now but like someone said, the completionist in me takes over..lol Anyways, for the previouslty mentioned crafts, I literally only level by deconstructing what i found so not that hard.

    provision/alchemy = easy.

    Enchanting...well.. what can i say..lol tough.. I think i'll definitly do those writs..lol

    thanks again

Technically You can craft VR when you've bought L5 Metalworking at Blacksmithing L25 when you can craft Calcinium equipment which is VR1, just to be pedantic :). The change point for each level of Metalworking is 5 levels of Blacksmithing.
