Ok so the Hunding's Rage crafting station is locked in behind some big gate.. Can anyone tell me what npc starts the quest/chain which eventually open said gate?

Bangkorai main quest chain. Starts in evermore.

Or, Travel to someone who is south of the gate.

It's not technically locked behind anything, but since you ask, the quest for that particular gate is part of the Bangkorai main quest line.

You could just go around though. There's a couple ways into the southern portion of Bangkorai to the west. You can see where the road sort of ends on the map. That's where you want to go.

You do a quest following the main DC storyline in that zone (Queen Arjela (sp?)) that leads you to the keep in the centre of the map. You clear the castle and you will be on the other side. I haven't tried but I'm surprised there isn't another way around. Did you try going around on the west coast because you can reach it by coming up from the south as well from memory.

Sunken Road wayshire, travel south and maneuver yourself down Nilata Falls and past Nomeg Hyri.
Then travel due east from the Nilata Ruins wayshire, avoiding the various big cats and daedra until you reach Wethers' Cleft.

Traveling due south from Wethers' Cleft will put you at Old Tower wayshire.

Oh, your description made me remember that I've actually done almost that journey. :) The zone was almost empty as well. Awesome feeling of exploration.

Yep, head to the Bangkorai Pass Garrison (I assume that's the "Giant Gate") turn East and move through the Fallen Grotto into the Sunken Road and exit moving to the Nilata Ruins Wayshrine. From there travel to Damar Farmstead on the road, take off all your armour and charge the Daedra. This will resurrect you at Old Tower Wayshrine from which you can move North-North East to get to Wether's Cleft. It's the same trip as he described with slightly more detail and a different means of getting to the Cleft ;)

#edit: Alternately, go to Ephesus Dolmen and try to jump your way down without armour, I think if you can find the way and die halfway down you'll resurrect at Old Tower Wayshrine.

Yes, I sometimes find it easier to get places by taking off my armour and dying ;)

I just wanted to say it :) Also, the dungeon right behind the Sunken Road Wayshrine has an exit to the sandy part of Bangkorai which is pretty cool. Just recently I tried if you can exit it before doing the Garrison quest, and yes, you can :)

I remember when months ago a friend wanted me to let him fasttravel to certain wayshrines since I've completed all zones with 2 characters, so I could do this for him.
Only in Bangkorai he could NOT "travel to player" while I was on the southern half and he still on the northern. I don't know why this different than in every other zone.

I explored all of Bangkorai on two alts using this method. I was just trying to do bosses, dolmens, lorebooks, skyshards, etc. without going through the quest unlock. Very easy to do, minimal fighting needed if you sneak at lower levels.

Of course you can also get to the southern half of Bangkorai by going through Fallen Grotto (just West of the "big gate" of Bangkorai Garrison) and then through the Sunken Road. Or, if you want, you can skip the Sunken Road and just follow the water down to the water fall. Some careful jumping will get you down alive. Then just take the road East to Wether's Cleft (but keep an eye out for all the daedra around Damar Farmstead).
