3 noob questions about quests and how to level more slowly

HI,

I really enjoy exploring the world and slowly leveling up through quests. Unfortunately - for me, at least - I'm levelling too fast. There's so much to see and explore and too much experience being handed out. Before I know it I'm too high a level for an areas quests and I hate running a quest I'm too high for.

To try to slow it down a little I've started avoiding the quests that scale to my own level. I've started ignoring the mages' guild, fighters' guild and main quest - for now at least. They seem to level up with me and I can take them any time.
What I want to know is - is there a level when I will have risen too high and will automatically fail any of them - say when I hit level 50? Or can I leave them till I'm good and ready, like a vet, say?

Second question - what happens regards leveling skills above level 50. Being a noob I'm not powerbuilding my toon hard -but am exploring different skill lines to see what they offer. I know I can reset and rebuild it all with gold later. But my question is, say because I'm exploring 3 weapon trees: bow, 2H and DW, I don't get one of those weapons above skill level 35 - but I decide its the one I want to focus on at vet - will the weapon keep leveling as I use it, above level 50, and providing I save skill points will I be able to unlock and morph its weapon powers as I continue to progress?

Final question - there doesn't happen to be a difficulty setting does there -where I can lower the experience I'm receiving- I've looked but I can't find one?

I just want to take the time to tell you, that you worry too much bout being overlevelled.

For some people it is a natural reaction (mainly due to how other games work) to be afraid of being overlevelled cause the content is boring then and you either have to accept boring gameplay or skip content.

Eso has a more refinded system, where this is not a real issue, but only in your head and only if you miss it.

being overlevelled has everything to do with the amount of experience you gain. Most experience gained comes from killing foes, completing quests and exploring things for the first time. the amount of experience gained from killing stuff is the most important one. for example. Killing 6 foes of your personal level, gives the same amount of xp as handing in a average quest.

When you kill something more then 2 levels below yours, you gain a highly reduced amount of XP. When you kill something that is more then 6 levels below it is allready nothing. This means that if you are overlevelled, the only real source of XP are the quests. This is not enough to keep staying overlevelled and means you will level significant slower. This also means that the advantage you have will be reduced very quickly.

So don't worry bout being overlevelled, if you are, you will be thrown back soon enough

Also, when you want to be challenged, you can always find a friendly vampire to escort you to the shrine and turn you into a vampire too. Then keep yourself at stage 4 at all time. You have reduced health recovery and take 50% more fire damage. This makes the game much more challenging.

Well, you're challenged if you become a vampire and level up the skill line but don't take any passives ! Because the passives make it very good.

Perhaps if you are a subscriber let it laps for a while as you gain 10% extra exp when you subscribe.

Just to add to what @LameoveR says (which is absolutely correct and right to the point):

Some other things that can be safely skipped until you hit Veteran Ranks if you're looking to reduce XP are group dungeons (they scale to your level), the werewolf or vampire quest (if you decide to become a WW or vamp these will scale to your level), Cyrodiil (you'll get battle-leveling there), crafting writs (the XP you get from them is small, but still), and any side quest that doesn't involve combat (no matter how much you out-level a quest you'll still get the same XP and gold/gear reward for turning it in, so if it doesn't involve combat you won't have out-leveled anything by leaving it until later).

As far as leveling weapon skills later goes, if you've got a weapon with the training trait on it, once you're VR you can actually level that weapon up very quickly. Much more quickly than pre-vet levels. A few days ago (I think Wednesday) I decided to start leveling destruction staff on a VR5 character (it was at level 6 or so just because of lore books). After maybe 3 or 4 hours of playing at most, I've now got the destruction staff skill up to 44 on that character. Ideally you want to be leveling all 3 armour skills pretty much right from the start, because those are a bit annoying to level later if you decide to switch up your build, but leveling up a new weapon skill line in VR is relatively easy.

To skip large amounts of XP, you can also decide to play sneaky instead of killing everything. There are stealthy paths around many mobs and minor bosses in the game. Invisibility potions can make it possible to skip lots of kills, and if you are really keen on reducing the kills to a minimum you can just run past large groups, let them chase you down and have them kill you past their spawn points. Wear no armor and you will only pay with a soul gem for your death.

Thanks for all the feedback.
I've been making use of most of the tips.
The reason being overlevelled was irritating was I was trying to get the quest achievements - you know, complete x number of quests in each area. I've been completing 30 quests and suddenly I'm way beyond the level of the 20 remaining -and to run them is just boring. Sure, I can just move on up to the next area...but, first, I actually enjoy exploring the areas and storytelling and b, i sort of wanted the achievement.
Shadowfen was a real bind because of this.
In Eastmarch I altered my style, stopped assigning attribute points -to make it all a little harder though it was still fairly easy - and didn't hand in the majority of the side quests until I'd finished everything.
Now I'm entering the Rift at level 39, at about the right level.

I would say, try to only do the quests. Follow the set out direction.
Zones are getting harder/higher in lvl as you progress trough the main quest.
dungeons are ofthen big xp boosters, sp you might want to hold off on them.
then mages an fighterguild, you want to pick them up, but you can hold off till later to do them(Same for the main line)
Holding ofc o stuff means holding off on skillpoints. So you choose...
