Soooooo....thinking about buying or building a desktop unit to play ESO for the kiddo!

Ballpark what price point for a machine that will run medium and ballpark price for ultra capable? Any suggestions on a specific unit?

I'm running the following:

i7 3770k
GTX 670 4GB
8GB RAM
Samsung 840 Pro SSD

Runs reliably well with most settings on high. If pricing stands true from a little over two years ago, I pieced mine together for about $1300 excluding Razer Blackwidow Chroma Keyboard/Mouse.

I doubt that pricing is accurate these days, my laptop thats a year old and runs it on ultra was only $1600 ish ...I'm eyeballing this...is it similar to yours?

Thats 2 keyboards and a mouse included with what appears to be a 6core processor and a GB graphics card 8gig ddr3 and TB HDD 7200 rpm @ $570

I'm running older hardware that the above poser, so this might help you get a range (weird to say that because at the time that stuff was the best you could get), and it runs about 50 FPS on max settings at 768p (1360 x 768).

My vital specs:

-Intel Q6000 Quad (but I overclock mine from 2.4 to 3.6 GHz, and this is why I can still run PC games maxed)
-GTX 480
-4 GB Corsair Dominator memory 1066 MHz
-ASUS Maximus Formula II motherboard

Soon it'll be time to build a new system for Witcher 3. It would run more or less fine on my system when overclocked at high-max, but not at 1080p.

go with an i7 if laptop or you could get away with an i5 desktop.. 8gb ram min and NVidia 650ti or better im sure is lots to play comfortably. im running i7 4790k, 8gb cl9 ram, NVidia gtx780 and 256gb solid state hd and to be honest its a lil overkill. I can run 100fps at 50% cpu/gpu usage.

That should be fine for your kid. Anything better and you should make him buy it himself LoL. in all seriousness, I would think that could play on ultra with an alright FPS.
I have an overclocked i5, 16 gigs of ram, 750ti sli cards and of course SSD for the master hd. I play everything over ultra meaning, view distance maxed, particles etc everything turned all the way to the sky and I still have 50fps on average. Cities that are busy drop to maybe 30 but its still fine. Cyrodiil same thing. 30-40fps when its going wild.

I recommend building a pared down performance machine.

Off the top of my head (and there are better resources out there that show for example Witcher 3 builds with relatively low cost):

-i5 processor
-large, cool and quiet Antec case (and not one with lights on it as you'll get sick of them)
-GPU and CPU only perform as well as your motherboard and PSU allow them to (I always stress this)
--recommend 150 dollar ish motherboard and 600+ W Corsair power supply (or other trustworthy power supply brand)
-GPU: Stick with NVidia if you don't want incompatibility headaches
--760 GTX apparently does the job with newer games, might be able to pick up a 680 GTX for cheaper and higher performance; do the research on this though

Nowhere close by spec comparison. Also no SSD. I would also stay away from AMD as current i5 or i7 greatly outperform them. I also refuse to mix a GeForce w/ an AMD processor.

Sorry. A PC game, the third of the Witcher series just came out. Incredible stuff.

A friend of mine just grabbed a 4 core with 6 gigs and a ~2 TB at Best Buy for liek $500 then put a good add-in $200 vid card in it.

He plays on high+ settings. for like $800 after tax.

I'm running something similar from about a year ago (with a cheaper vid card), but I added RAM (up to 6 now) and upgraded my vid card to one that is ~$200 now, since then. (We are both running WIn7 because 8 is crap ) I run High + some things turned up.

ESO runs really well on some really older machines now as long as you have RAM and a decent vid card.

If using identical parts, always cheaper to build it yourself imo. Plus you have the knowledge that the work was done right.

I think that buying a PC right now, is a bit a guess in the blue.

DX 12 will come out in a few months and I would advice everyone to either wait until Autumn, or invest in hardware that will fully utilize the new DX generation.

For instance,

your GPU should have ACE. It allows for tasks to be simultaneously processed independently of one another. So that each one of the multiple thousand shader units inside a modern GPU can be put to as much use as possible to improve performance. Idle parts will no longer wait their turn, but already do their work before its visible on screen.

This means that in future our GPU´s will be finally able to work at their intended capacities and the pop ups that players suffer under should be less frequent, as hopefully in future the current "prioritization" that developers like to code into their games, could be lifted, so that no longer the " less important" effect´s are held back, until the more important ones are drawn.

If you like AMD cards, any card from the 1.0 GCN on will have it. The newer cards 1.1 and 1.2 will have more ACE units than the 1.0. (2-8) If you prefer Nvidia, then any card of the Maxwell family will do.

AMD users can already see the benefits if they enable Mantle at BF and Thief.

As for the CPU,

I would go for an Haswell build or wait until Skylake comes up. AMD is sadly not really viable for gaming setups.

Building your own PC is definitely recommended, you save a lot of money and will know what's inside your PC. A Desktop PC that I build in 2012, still plays any current game on Ultra - just the GPU was swapped out and the rig in total was around 600$.

One important note though, so far DX 12 is not out and also not implemented in ESO. My guess is they will patch their game to support it around autumn - winter. Blizzard patched their game once as well, to support DX 11, so having both options (11 + 12) shouldn't be a big issue for the DEVs, but we need to wait and see.

So in short,

Get an Intel CPU, either Haswell or Skylake towards the end of the year, an AMD card of the 1.0 generation or higher and complementary hardware like a HDD (7200 rpm, PSU...)

If you have a setup I can take a look

I think im set for DX 12 I will upgrade my processor and Motherboard for SC when SC launches. Right now it plenty good for all of my Alpha testing needs. My HOTAS cost more than my Motherboard, Memory and Power Supply combined.

Watching the class action lawsuit against Nvidia on the 970 memory issue. I haven't noticed as much of the issues as were claimed. But I have noticed the transition from 2.5G DDR to the upper part of 3G DDR the screen will flash black for a real quick instance. So I would not advise anyone to get the GTX 970. I wish I had knew about the memory Issue before I bought these cards.

@SeptimusDova Np. Minus the GTX 970's, I like your setup. Not that they're bad, but I've always told myself If I was going to start dropping more cash, I would move towards the GTX 690. Friend blew his income tax refund on it and loves throwing it back in my face daily.

buy a evga 780 sc 6gb special, its a wonderfull graka and you will get it for about 500-600

I should of done the same thing I had the 760 and it was fine. But as I was writing some code for the IRTracker I needed a three monitor DVI setup. I could not get that option by adding another 760 card(Memory constraints, Monitor size) and the 970 was the cheaper option. I get what I paid for. Should of sprung for the Ti series or the quadro series . Lesson learned. If only Nvidia had been upfront..
