The main questline appears about every 5 levels as you go through the zones. You'll hit a wayshrine and the Prophet shows up to tell you to come talk to him in the Harborage again.

There's the main questline, and there's the 'primary storyline' in each zone (the quests that reward skill points).

As others said, the main questline will be accessed through the prophet \ the harborage.

There really is no way to differentiate the 'primary storylines' in each zone, other than paying attention to the storylines and knowing the characters. When you first play it is hard to distinguish them from the side quests, everything seems like an alphabet soup of names and unrelated quest objectives. It isn't until you've played the game for 1000 hours or so when it really becomes enjoyable, when you've done all the quest lines enough to be able to differentiate all the characters and discern the main storyline from all the other quests happening simultaneously. That's when the game really makes sense, when you've done the same quests over, and over, and over again.

When you get to VR level, you can just focus on the main storyline quests in each zone, and then go back and do the side quests. I actually found that better for enjoying the storyline. At regular level you can't really do that, as you will be under leveled towards the end of the zone, and might even lose xp by being over levelled for some of the side quests at the beginning of the zone.

Really, the best thing to do is to quit your job, say goodbye to your family, and be prepared to take multiple characters through all the content of the game. It will all make sense then and be much more rewarding then anything else you would do.

There are achievements related to the main and faction story quests in the journal.

It'd be nice if someone made a list of all the primary zone quests in the correct order for all zones and posted it somewhere - that way those whom, like I, want to do the quests in the correct order, don't have to worry about starting a quest we come upon when exploring in fear that it might be one of the zone primary quests that we haven't gotten to yet via the storyline. Just notice if the quest name is on the list when it starts and if it is, abandon it and save it for later when you get to it correctly.

Maybe I'll make a list sometime.

It's actually not something I personally need as I'm already at the point where I'm in cadwell's silver/gold now so the almanac helps in that regard, but it'd help a lot of story-interested new players I'm sure.

I think this is a correct list but I haven't gotten far enough to check them all out

It's correct, but it only has the quests required for the Cadwell Objectives, which doesn't include all the zone storyline quests.

For all your quest needs, Start Here.

    Awesome, thanks Enodoc.

When I first started, unfortunately I did the Daggerfall city quests before finding Captain Kaleen, I did the Angof parts before any of the Aldcroft/Camlorn quests, and I completely skipped any of the Wyrd quests until coming back a couple zones later to do all of the quests in the area. I would have done them in the correct order had there been a list like this back then, but, there was no real way to know if it was a quest in a series or not just by exploring and picking them up, so some things didn't make much sense to me in the quests, and I probably missed a lot of references.

Most of the quests are given by level. I usually try to do any and all quests in order of level. If eventually I'm led to a main story qiest, then I'll do them until I reach the next level bracket.

Your main harborage quests come every 10 or so levels, the mage and fighters guild you can complete around lvl 30'ish so you can finish those first since, they are technically part of the main storyline. The last quests for the guilds are scaled at around 42/43 and pretty doable at 30+ - I finished my alt at 33, although my next prophet quest is not available yet.
You stink of death my friend, I salute you.
