Game freezing/lockup

antmck2011rwb17_ESO
This has happened 5 times today (4 in Eyevea). Never happened before. I wasn't doing anything in particular. Several times I was just traveling on foot or mount just to get from A to B. Once it happened when clicking on a bookshelf in Eyevea's bank. The 1st time I was trying to complete the mages guild quest to unlock Eyevea. Each time I have to control-alt-del and end the process. Seems to happen every 5 mins. I haven't made any changes to my hardware and I have all drivers up to date. I'm running Windows 7 home premium 64 bit. with 16gig of ram. I've attached the DxDiag.txt file.

Well, it just happened again. This time just outside Riften.

Another sudden freeze - this time in Cold harbour Library.

I feel your pain. I'm about at my wits end with the crashing. it's not possible for me to count how many times mine crashes in a day unless I create an ESO crash app for my phone or something, lol.

Mine will play fine sometimes for 4-6 hours straight, then just suddenly start crashing every 1-5 minutes until I quit. It's like the game is persistently trying to send a file to me that's keeps crashing it.
  • antmck2011rwb17_ESO
Well, it just happened again. Just travelled to the Cold Harbour Wayshrine hopped on my tiger and bolted towards the crafting stations. Got to the top of the stairs and bam! FREEEEZE. What is coursing this?

This has been happening to me since last patch. I walk out of bank, freeze- had to do hard reset. Then a few minute ago froze again. I was just walking in Davon's Watch and someone ran by healing ppl. As soon as I got 'hit' with the heal spell, frozen. The music still plays, but task mgr shows ESO not responding. Super duper annoying! I also have Windows 7 home premium 64 bit. Though only with 8gig of ram. I also updated Nvidia drivers the same day as patch if that means anything idk... just want it to stop freezing so I can play the darn game!

I did too, now I'm wondering if I need to roll back. Its performing great, but I'm crashing more. It's hard to say, it could be anything though.

Mine was freezing up before the latest NVidia driver update. The update doesn't seem to have changed anything.
Some days it's fine and others not. 5 freezes in 1 day is the record so far.

I've been following the technical forum for the past few months and seeing how everyone thinks their system and drivers are at fault or something (posting PC specs etc). Its true that there are instances where there could be driver issues (probably not NV drivers) and unstable Operating Systems, like the unmaintained, cracked or pirated types.

However I would go as far as saying most tweaking or "fixes" would likely be coincidental. I've been involved in game programming myself (not professionally). I've been part of the Quake/idTech engine modding scene since 1999 so I know some graphics engine programming and some general game programming stuff.

My view is, unless you have problems in other games and applications, I'm of the opinion that your drivers or operating system being the culprit is highly unlikely. Its absolutely certain to be bugs and issues within the game client... be that graphics, sound, networking or general memory management.

I would go as far (but that's just me) by saying ditch any add-ons and keep your INI tweaking to a minimum (or pref. no tweaking). This will keep any additional random issues, current or future out of the picture as we should know by now that the game is still not stable (and understandably so) and things will change a lot with each patch. Whether those fixes are for the better or for the worse is debatable.

I had my first game freeze today. I found it impossible to kill the process as ESO just hogs all the screen space. Switching tasks is useless. I found the simplest way to get rid of the process is to CTRL-ALT-DELETE and sign-out your Windows login. That kills the process... then you just sign-in again and start the game again. This is on Windows 8.1 (64-bit) fully updated. I normally always keep my graphics drivers updated to the latest, but currently I still got NV's previous driver installed when I had my freeze. I doubt it highly its driver issues, normally issues like those have a possibility to BSOD you system, then you know its drivers crashing and whatever.

As for the game freezes itself... I'll take a guess and say its more memory management related than any GPU issues.

    Just my 2c

I've been getting random freezes ever since 2.0.8. Usually in Mournhold, but I sometimes get it in Riften. My guildies reporting the same thing. One of them blamed Windows 8, but it's not the case since I'm running Win 7 - 64. Running the game on nVidia 460 GTX - all drivers and windows patches are regularly applied.

Have you updated the video driver? NVidia just released an update and they acknowledge a problem with the nvidia streaming service.... Might try that

I use Windows 8, game started freezing every 20 minutes after last patch.

I cannot swear this will help everyone, but setting the eso.exe file to administrator under compatibility just let me run a 4 hour session without the freeze.

I was about to report the same thing, ever since 2.09 I've been getting lag, freezing up, and out right crashes. The lag is bad enough that I can shoot one npc with bow and the other npc next to them does nothing until I start shooting them.

Day 2, still no freezes. I'm sure this won't work for everyone, but such a simple thing to try it might be worth it.

Been suffering with the Game locking up on me since I started playing fully (now into the 2nd week of play). Only way I could get out was to CTRL+ALT+DEL and close the game manually (which says elder scrolls online Not Responding.

After a couple of good days it just happened again in Coldharbour.
  • antmck2011rwb17_ESO
After playing for hours without trouble - I went to Coldharbour and less then 2mins it froze. Seems to happen a lot in Coldharbour and then when I'm mounted and moving at full speed. Don't know if this is related or not. I'm now only going to Coldharbour for writs anyway. They don't show up Glenumbra vet zone (yet).

I've had this problem for a while, hence my signature. CS has tried to help but nothing is fixing the issue. I even loaded their usersettings.txt file because they keep telling me they go where I crash and don't crash at all. I can go to the same places and crash every time. Sometimes all it takes is hitting J to open my journal in a dungeon and I crash and have to start over.

They did find some bad game code in the AD the first time I reported it but they swear nothing is wrong with the game this time so I dunno....very irritated....

I've gone as far as reinstalling, trying a ton of different drivers, installing on another system and using a different ISP, all with the same results.

On top of the issue I'm currently having (game failing to even start due to a BEX-StackHash error), I've had ESO start actually "Hanging" this week. It's only happened 2-3 times, however.

Prior to this week, though, the game would run absolutely fine for hours on end.

I can spend all day in Glenumbra (vet level) and no lockups/crashes. As soon as I go to Coldharbour... freeze! I was only there like 5 minutes. I was only using my tiger mount to move around too, wasn't actually interacting with anything at the time of the crash. Looks like I can't go to Coldharbour anymore.

This happens to me at least once every day. More often than not, several times a day (depending on how long I play). Hell, sometimes it happens right after getting on my mount. When it freezes up I still hear music and or sounds of the things in my area, including players if I am in a town. This has been happening constantly since I came back in March and similar crashes happened in beta and all of last year.

I have a beast of a pc with hardware that far exceeds that needed to run this game on ultra smooth. This game is poorly coded and I have my doubts about their developers. I could understand if this was a beta... oh wait...

Did not change anything for me.
I have been doing this for a while and still get random freezes on a daily basis.
In fact, it was a freeze that caused me to log onto the forums and post a response here just now. I was trying to interact with an npc and boom, freeze.

I suppose this is par for the course when idiots don't listen to their testers and rush a launch despite the presentation of overwhelming evidence against such an action.

Well, looks like I can't go to Bangkorai either. Been playing for ages in Stormhaven without prob. As soon as I go to Bangkorai - FREEZE!!!. So Coldharbour and Bangkorai are not off limits. That would be fine it I didn't need Bangkorai.
    What is causing this!

Wtf do we have to do to get your attention and fix this? This has been an issue since launch. There are threads going back to April 2014 (http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/en/discussion/68683/eso-crashes-only-seconds-into-loading-anything)

I have an open CS ticket with upper level on this. They have thrown up their hands and tell me that the number of players having this issue is VERY small hence they cannot do anything about it since they cannot reproduce it. I have sent every single thread I can find on the forums to CS showing it isn't a SMALL problem!! I haven't done anything but feed my horses for the past three weeks over this error since I can't play without the crash.

Game froze three times for me today. Mournhold, and Belkarth (twice). No crash report, just stopped responding, need to use task manager to kill. This is a new record for me, usually it is only two or three times per week since 1.6.

Happens to me every single day. Yesterday it happen twice within the span of 15 minutes.

Again this morning I logged on for the sole purpose of hireling/writ management and it froze.
What really pisses me off is the lack of accountability from ZOS on this matter. When they do swoop in and attempt to save the day, it's usually the same generic pc troubleshoot rhetoric. Why the hell can't they admit it's the game and from there actually bring about a solution or at least a work-around? This cat and mouse denial and redirect nonsense only perpetuates the problem.

IF what @Seravi said above is accurate, that's alarming and repugnant all at the same time.
