Confused about Ultimate

If an ultimate costs 100 and I have 400 saved up why when I use it does it use all available ultimate?

It's just the way it works with most ults. Use it. Rather than lose the extra ults. BTW, one ultimate used to cost 1000k hence the total we can acumulate.
    Really, idk

Just does not make sense. If it costs 100 and I have 400 I should be able to use it 4 times or be able to switch to my other and use it. Guess it is just the way it is.

Roll a sorc and use Overload... it's the only ultimate I know off that uses all of your ult points because it's a toggle until you run out.

Because they are specifically designed to not be spammed. If you could cast Dawnbreaker 10 times in a row or Meteor 5 times in a row, you would wreck everything in sight. So they would have to nerf ultimate abilities drastically if you could just cast them over and over with no pause. And if they nerfed them, they would not be very "ultimate"!

    Pretty much this.

If you've got an ultimate slotted that only costs 100, then you should be using it almost as frequently as you build up 100 ultimate. Making it so that ultimate could be spammed over and over until you run out of ultimate, though, would be really bad for game balance, because you'd get ridiculous burst DPS.

Beat me to it.... that was a 1.6 change.

Overload, for all of its warts (easy to miss light attacks, low AOE damage) is very satisfying for people like me who hate wasting resources :) And you get that 3rd bar bonus to boot.

Thanks, my NB use Veil of Blades mostly now. Plus, he has been pretty much parked since before 1.6

What about the Sorcerer passive "Power Stone" (Daedric Summon skill line), which reduces the cost of ultimate abilities by x%? Does this even make sense then? After seeing this thread, I'm not so sure anymore..

Absolutely it makes sense. It means that you can use your ultimate more frequently because it takes less time to build it up until it's ready for use.

That's how I understood it, too, before seeing this thread. I'm glad this is still true, thanks for your reply :)

That is a great passive! It means you can drop your Ultimate skills more frequently because they cost less. If it normally takes you 40 seconds to gain enough ultimate to use, say, Meteor, it will now take only 34 seconds. Over the course of a long boss fight, you'll be able drop your ultimate more times than if you did not have that passive, which will increase your DPS. Or in PvP, if your equally powerful ultimate is ready before your opponent's, that is a nice advantage.

You might look at ultimate costs as an indirect cooldown. So lowered ultimate cost means shorter cooldown.
