I'm sorry I hit you, NPC, don't attack me!

There have been several times now when I was in combat and accidentally hit a friendly NPC, who immediately stops attacking the enemy and begins attacking me! Seriously? I'm sorry, but that is broken. Accidents happen in combat. Moreover, I've got to kill the NPC, or die myself, in either case, I get a bounty? What? WTF? It wan't intentional. It was in combat! To me, it's more than annoying, it's a bug with the game. A serious bug. In real life, if you were to accidentally hit an ally in combat, which I'm sure happened, and happens, a lot, they don't immediately begin to attack you, siding with the enemy they were just fighting. It's freaking stupid. I would like a comment from ZOS on this situation, as well as any comments from the forum in general on their thoughts. Thanks! :)

There's an option in settings to make it so you can't hit friendly/neutral NPC's.

Ya, you go accidentally stab someone or shoot someone try get away with it.

Accidentally ran you over, wasn't intended on doing it, just got in heat of moment with driving and texting.... Don't call cops on me and give me a bounty!

    Better,
bunch of soldiers in an area,
    drop bomb in that area,
woops accidentally did that don't get mad at me.

    Nahhh brah, you good.

What really happens, you get dishonorable discharge yada yada yada, those soldiers hate you for life because you ALMOST killed them. yada yada yada.

Friendly fire is real! Real pain when you do it too.

IMO, this should be on by default.

If you want to be a murderer, it should be premeditated :p

I remember questing in Nord-ville and went into a cave, saw a sneaking Nord and stuck an arrow in his arse... turned out to be a "King's Guard" instead of one of the billion highwaymen I had been slaughtering on the whole-sale.

Actually, no. No one is dishonorably discharged for friendly fire kills. I know, I served in Iraq. Nothing happens to you whatsoever, unless someone claims you did it intentionally, and then they investigate the incident. Without an accusation, nothing happens whatsoever. I saw it many times my friend.

I am a little surprised at the hyperbole drawn between this innocent question and maliciously killing people IRL intentionally...

If you want that level of realism, why don't we use the restroom? Why is there no mandatory sleep/rest? How come I am just as combat effective at 1% health as I am at 100%? Why does every merchant in the game happily hand over his life savings every time I visit him to dump a load of garbage in his lap?

    oh wait... IT'S A GAME!

True, in real life, if you stole someone stuff, they might get to the point they hunt you down. If you steal something undetected those people will TRY and find out who did it.

You appear in someones house and complete stranger.... I believe Florida law allows you to kill on sight, no joke... Nobody is going to say get out, they going to attack you and get cops on you and such.. They not going to let you casually walk out the door.

I'm going someone house and steal there PS4, see what happens.
I'm going to be in sneak mode in a complete stranger house, and walk out the door like it aint nothing... Not like they gonna put there foot on the door and give me a beatdown or keep me there until the guards come... I mean cops!

What I meant by my statement was that, as a soldier in the Army, if I accidentally wound or kill an ally, I am not hunted down and given a bounty. Nothing happens. People don't attack me and I'm not accused of murder or even charged with a crime. The point of my OP was that, while in combat, if you accidentally attack an ally, it's treated as if you were committing a crime, which is a bug in the game. Period. I wasn't talking about breaking in to anyone's home, or intentionally attacking anyone. If you and an NPC ally are engaged in combat with an enemy and you accidentally even hit that ally, he will turn on you and attack you along with the enemy. That was my point. Your point is fair too, but completely off topic.

It reminds me of how in Skyrim, common bandits still go after me even if there's like a Dragon attacking. Priorities.

Here I am all "enemy of my enemy" work together sort, but nah the bandit's more interested in my gold than actually surviving. Either that or turning me into a rug.

    Hi jkemmery :)

I just started playing 3 days ago. An early Mother's Day gift from my son who has been playing since closed beta and the first thing he did for me was making sure I couldn't play whack-a-mole with friendly NPC's. He knows me well... through many games... Ultima Online... so many 'oh my bad' moments.. ohhh.. that was not a brigand.. being my first ..oops issue.

But like someone else stated, and my husband found out last night when he stole and got throttled, he also couldn't defend himself. He stood there mashing his buttons, wondering why he couldn't fight back. I told him it was because he was a bad person.. :D My son told him the truth today...

Actually I saw the opposite in Skyrim several times, the brigands attack the dragon too and when the dragon dies, they even make the same commentary as other people when they witness the soul drain from the dragonborn. After that the bandits come back to business with you if you are still there :).

As for the topic, I had that unchecked too, because I was also attacked for something unrelated to the NPC, but then in a quest with friendly npc fighters that i was helping, one of my skills was aoe and hit the npc, I had to kill him and received + 250 gold bounty. All that defending the businees of the Queen lol. Guess there is no perfect solution. Maybe only possible to attack friendly npc when actively targgeting them?

If you have the "don't attack innocents" option checked, you don't even have two options, only one (die). If I get caught stealing in a house and get attacked by one of the NPC's, I basically just have to sit and let them beat on me until I die. I can't leave the house because I can't open a door. I can't fight back because I have the "no innocents" option checked. I can only die, or logout and probably still die anyway.

Not all the time but if you're pursued by an NPC and have aggro, an invisibility potion will break this aggro thus interrupt the fight thus allow you to leave the place or the room. Of course you'd better be quick and not hang around making photographs
