Having just popped back into the game after a long break (think pre-FTP era), I was pleasantly surprised to find that snooping around in private residences, among other things, now earns me the attention of nearby guards. This time, it only cost me 30g to put the matter to rest, but I do want to know what else will get me in trouble (and what kind of trouble).

To make a long story short, if anyone could just provide me with a link to where I can find comprehensive info about how the justice system works, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!

I'd recommend going to game options and turning on "prevent attacking innocents" if you don't want to accidentally rack up a bounty by misclicking and hitting civilians. Murder is generally a poor way to make money anyways.

    You can:
    -Steal from containers.
-Steal items that are laying around.
    -Pickpocket NPC's with varying difficulty.
-Break into homes and other areas.
-Lockpick vendor lockboxes to get the loot inside.
-Murder civilians and loot their corpse.

Loot from containers and pockets is usually in the form of items that have no use except for being sold at a fence. Though you can still find recipes, motifs, and even clothes now. These will be taken from you if you get caught, so make sure to launder valuable items at the fence (i.e. convert them to non-stolen versions) for personal use.

Chests you find in the wilderness now also give xp to the thieving skill line when lockpicked, but they aren't considered a crime and don't raise your bounty.

Had to give you an awesome just for the title.
Tenesi Faryon of Telvanni - Dunmer Sorceress who deliberately sought sacrifice into Cold Harbor to rescue her beloved.
Hisa Ni Caemaire - Altmer Sorceress, member of the Order Draconis and Adept of the House of Dibella.
Broken Branch Toothmaul - goblin (for my goblin characters, I use either orsimer or bosmer templates) Templar, member of the Order Draconis and persistently unskilled pickpocket
Mol gro Durga - Orsimer Socerer/Battlemage who died the first time when the Nibenay Valley chapterhouse of the Order Draconis was destroyed, then went back to Cold Harbor to rescue his second/partner who was still captive. He overestimated his resistance to the hopelessness of Oblivion, about to give up, and looked up to see the golden glow of atherius surrounding a beautiful young woman who extended her hand to him and said "I can help you". He carried Fianna Kingsley out of Cold Harbor on his shoulder. He carried Alvard Stower under one arm. He also irritated the Prophet who had intended the portal for only Mol and Lyris.
    ***
Order Draconis - well c'mon there has to be some explanation for all those dragon tattoos.
House of Dibella - If you have ever seen or read "Memoirs of a Geisha" that's just the beginning...
Nibenay Valley Chapterhouse - Where now stands only desolate ground and a dolmen there once was a thriving community supporting one of the major chapterhouses of the Order Draconis

It's a lot of fun! My guild has organized a couple of thieving competitions where we all start with 2000g and have an hour to steal as much as we can and the person with the most money (after payment of any bounties) at the end wins.

I ended up becoming a murderer when I stole something and a NPC attacked me. I never hit back, however both of the dadera I had summoned did beat the tar out of the man. I considered appealing the case. On the other hand I also believe summoning Dadera within a town is likely a jail-able offense as well.

For all those who do end up with a high bounty remember the time will lower while in Cyrodill.

    <snip>

    wrong.

if u dont care about bounty, u can go to lower level encampment and SLAUGHTERED everyone there - such as army encampment - and loot everyone. their respawn rate is insane and they ALL drop something at LEAST worth 30G, usually 100.

I got around 50k per night but I got WAY too many items i could've fenced but was limited to daily fence cap.
