Help with purchasing a game key

I'm trying to purchase a game key to give as a gift. The problem I'm having is that it seems you need to create an account to do this. I'd like to be able to just provide the key by sending it via email or something, so that the receiving party can create their own account on their own PC after I give them the key. Is there a way to do this? I feel like I am missing something.

You make a cute gift card with a link to create a gaming account, another link to the digital download store and place it in an envelope with money (can be cash or card limited gift credit) and the give your friend.

Simple and easy.

Purchase it via Steam or another third-party site. I know one in particular, but I'm sure the ToS does not allow advertising.

You could just buy the digital version from your preferred online shop. You will get the code by email then.
