Why can't I have more than 1 treasure map?

I always wondered why they changed it so that you can't pick up a treasure map if you have the same one already?

Also, why can't I put them in guild banks? What's the point of restricting these maps so much? Especially when we can get around the restrictions so easily, I can put the map in my bank and pick up another one, or just mail it to a friend for him to return, or if I already have one in the bank I can pull it out to an alt and put another one in there.

I see no reason why these maps shouldn't work the same as say... a motif, or recipe. Give them a category in the guild store, let people hoard them if that's what they really want.

Treasure maps should be something people want to see, not something that just creates more hassles than it's (usually) worth.

I am not sure why they made them a unique item either, but it is lame :( I guess so someone can't get like 20 of them and just go to one spot to collect 20 treasures?

Except we can still do that with a bunch of mails that were returned to us.

Well, for survey maps you can do this, because I have before. Just let them build up in my inventory inside the little "prize packs" you get for completing crafting writs. Mostly because I'm lazy and don't want to go hunt them down immediately after, so they build up naturally. Then once I've got more in my inventory than I'm willing to justify, I run out to the spot using the one that's in my inventory, run a little ways away from the spot, open my next map and run back.

I don't understand why they're restricted/limited either, and I don't think it makes any sense.

With treasure maps it'd be more difficult, since they don't often come in their own containers. But I don't see why it'd be a problem.

I would imagine you can only have one at a time because possession of the map affects the world. One map = one chest in a specific location. If you had the same map twice, there would be two chests in the same location, on top of each other, which would result in interaction and clipping issues.

Short version is their spawn mechanic wouldn't know how to handle it.

    Partly the reason I guess.

If you have one in your inventory and find the mound of earth then open the chest the mound and map disappears. If you then get another one from your mailbox the mound doesn't respawn.

It's a while since I did this so can't remember if I had to actually zone out and back or whether simply moving far enough away to activate the spawn trigger did the trick.

However, this mechanic doesn't per se mean you shouldn't be able to have more than one in your possession, clearly there are a few ways where you can consume one and get another without moving without it having to be in your inventory.

@fromtesonlineb16_ESO , you are correct. If you zone out and return or wait for some unknown cooldown, the item will respawn. Same goes for Crafting Surveys. Zoning is by far the faster method.

The part that prevents you from having multiples (present coding) is that as soon as you consume the item (mound/node/chest, whatever), it consumes the corresponding map in your inventory. Essentially you'd use all your maps at once for that single node.

Why they didn't code drops with a quick inventory check is beyond me.

A Unique item isn't very unique if there is two of them at the same time (in reference to a single character, that is), not just because I'm only allowed to carry one.

The reason for it is probably the mechanics of the treasure maps. The locations show up only if you have one - you do not see the mud heaps of you don't.

As soon as you see it or interact with it, the maps automatically get deleted. Now if you have 10 identical maps in your inventory, they have no way to separate them - all of them would dissapear upon looting the location once.

Since there is no distinction between "inventory-unique" and "bank-unique" in the game, you also can't make it so that you could store several on the bank while still be restricted to one in inventory.

Granted, the system is a little inconvenient. Several times I had to leave a map in a chest or container due to having it in the inventory already, but the effort required to change that is not worth it for the results. Treasure maps would have to be more than just a source for soul gems or under-level set pieces for sale (since there is no area yet that provides V14 loot from chests).

And that may very well be another can of worms ("I demand my imperial maps refunded because now you get better loot then when I used them").

This - unnecessary. It's a map that's entirely useless unless you physically have it. If you like the images, you can download those from UESP.

I would assume it's so that you can't just buy 20 of the same map and go to the location and endlessly farm it. Just saying.

    This.

Either way you'd be using your tricks to avoid consuming all your maps on one treasure, so the fact that they don't stack is irrelevant.

When that happens, I mail the map I have in my inventory to a guildie for return and grab the new map.

Also, for those wondering, if you move away from the spawn location, grab your other map from the mail and move back, the new mound (or the new survey) will respawn.

Huh. It never occurred to me to do that. A couple of times I have discovered a treasure map that I already had in a chest and been unable to loot it. All I've done in those cases is leave the map in the chest, go to use the map in my inventory, and come back to the chest I left to see if the map I left behind is still there. Sometimes it is, and sometimes someone else has come and grabbed it in the meantime.

I guess the takeaway for me is that I should L2Mail.

I'm 99% sure that back in the early days this restriction wasn't even a thing. I remember having multiple maps in my inventory and walking 100m away then coming back and opening another treasure chest.

Why would it be a bad thing if someone buys a bunch of treasure maps and "farms" these chests? Isn't that very similar to farming a dungeon, or farming drops in a location? In fact farming treasure maps would require a lot more work and it would help support the global economy if they were sold on a guild store.

It's like every item that ZOS deems unique is pretty much garbage and just becomes a hassle. I wish they would reconsider the treasure maps, because as useless as they usually are, I still enjoy finding them and eventually digging up some treasure. I can't see how having multiple copies would in any way cause exploits or effect my game in any negative ways.
