It would be nice it you could select addons through an in-game interface similar to the workshop systems used by Steam to add mods to Skyrim. Maybe at the character screen, you could browse a list of addons and select the ones you want. Once selected these addons would be updated automatically.

This interface would work on both consoles and PCs.

It would be a nice addition - but there is already a pretty robust third party solution called Minion, which you can download from ESOUI.com.

It's not "in-game" but Minion does almost the exact thing you are looking for, if you haven't seen it yet here's a link. Been using it for the past year along with alot of other players from what I can tell.

    http://minion.mmoui.com/

edit: just to be clear it doesn't update "automatically" but all you have to do is open the program up and hit update.

I never actually knew about that, after the issues with the ATLAS add-on months back, I like to update mine one by one anyways, but I can see the convenience value in it. Thanks for the heads up

The problem is that the console players can't use Minion.

This is a worry as some addons are needed to make up for the lack luster eso frame.

No, they aren't. Some people like them, but they aren't needed.
Edit: Also, this is a moot point, as console players won't have any addons, period.

OP: The reason this can't happen is that third-party addons for MMOs are much different from the type of mods you see in the single-player series, and ZO doesn't officially support them. Having an official downloader/organizer would be a form of support from the company, and it opens up all kinds of potential problems for them when an addon doesn't work/gets corrupted/is spyware.

Console players can't use addons either, so they don't need an addon interface.

Console players don't have access to workshop in skyrim.
What ESO really needs is an Auction Horse.

I know, but wouldn't it be nice if for once the ESO developers did something innovative that no other MMO has done previously?

Just want to add that Minion is pretty awesome. Even an in game add-on chooser would still require a UI restart anyway.

I'm sure they would do it, if it was allowed. Consoles never have user made addons because Sony/Microsoft/Nintendo don't allow it.

Little Big planet? Project Spark? It's up to the devs.

I'm pretty sure portal 2 allowed for pc mods to be ran on ps3 and 360.

That's great, but it doesn't make consoles awesome beyond the usual advantages: no technical hassle, playing from the couch etc. Console versions of TES gamse have no gameplay advantage over the PC version, in fact, they're clearly inferior. The reasons:
    1. Performance and stability. A moment of silence for our PS3 Skyrim friends.
    2. Bugs and glitches. All hail the unofficial patches team!
    3. Mods. You can play 100% vanilla on both console and PC if you want, but only PC can do more than that.

LBP is owned by Sony and Project Spark by Microsoft. Also both of those games are built around that experience and have a ingame editor using already existing assets. Very different from an actual mod which might have new code and textures etc.

Addons are not mods and do not modify the ESO game with new code, or change the game's core variables. Addons use API calls that are already coded into the game using the Lua programming language which is interpreted by the ESO game code in real time. The mods used in Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim actually change the game code.

Portal is owned by Valve Corporation, and uses their game engine and editor.

I believe the reason why Microsoft and Sony don't allow mods because they want each player to have the same exact game experience with no deviation in quality or performance, and to prevent cheating, and the UI had to be much bigger than the PC version so that users could read the quest and other UI text on the TV screen from across the room.

I posted my comment because after seeing videos of the console UI and IMO they could use some addon love.

I should have referred to just the PC version of ESO in my OP so that the console version wouldn't be dragged into this discussion.
