The math behind blocking mitigation

I'm looking for some help in figuring out the math behind block mitigation.

The base amount of damage that is mitigated from blocking is 50%.
If using Sword & Board, you gain 20% additional block mitigation.
If using Footman, you gain 12% additional block mitigation.
If using Cyrodiil's Ward, you gain 12% additional block mitigation.
If using ]Absorb Magic/Defensive Stance, you gain 8% additional block mitigation.
----That's 102% and we can see with the above sets and skill active (on the bar), there is still incoming damage while blocking (I tested quickly).

There is also the passive for Deflect Bolts whereby 15% of damage from projectiles & ranged attacks is mitigated.

You can mitigate 8% additional damage from from Turn Undead (standing in the rune).

Of the remaining incoming damage, with the sets above equipped, you mitigate approximately 25% (I didn't do the exact calc, assuming about 16k armor/MR with majors up) of the remaining damage.

I only spent about 5 minutes testing this, and while blocking in a Turn Undead rune, my damage mitigation numbers range from 92.4 to 97.8% over a sample of 40 attacks.

There's something key that I'm missing, and I'd appreciate any info from other people who have looked into this before. I'll probably test in detail with various combinations of the mitigation options next week.

Thanks!

Armor mitigation hardcap is also 50%, in addition to block mitigation.

i do belive the base block mitigation is not 50 but 30%

Normally those kind of % math arent stacking

So if for exemple . You get hit by mitigating 1k dmg

    Then you will have

    Base mitigation 50% 1000x.5 =500 ... 1000-500= 500

    Sword and board 20% 500x.2 = 100.....500-100=400

    Footman 12% 400x.12= 48 400-48 = 352

    Cyro ward 12% 352x.12 = 42.24.... 352- 42.24 = 309,76

sooo... you see the patern ?. its not 102% its more like 70% after dimishing return . If its actualy stacking the percentage then its broken

If that's the way it works, then for the theoretical scenario is:

    20% dodge change is *0.8
    50% block base is *0.5
    20% passive is *0.8
    12% ward is *0.88
    12% footman is *0.88
    8% absorb is *0.92
    8% turn undead is *0.92
    30% armor/mr is *0.7
    15% ranged is *0.85

All of this together is about 0.20 so a total of 80% mitigation.

From my testing, all of that together showed a level of mitigation in the low 90 %'s.

This leads me to believe that there is at least one of the items/skills/passives that is additive instead of multiplicative.

That kind of stuff is easy to test.

Also make sure when you're testing you're not testing against Projectiles.

I'd be curious to know exactly how this works myself.

if someone is testing this - it would be great to test blockcost for spells as well as some spells seem to drain no or nearly no stamina when beeing blocked.

ps: can offer help with all classes on the EU server.

Block costs are on my list of things to test. My next week is going to be rather busy (I won't be on much), so I'll probably only get to spend the time next weekend (25th/26th).

I have noticed that when blocking Agony from nightblade-like mobs (usually dualwield type, spell places a ring of thorns at your feet and mezzes you), the act of blocking does not seem to drain stamina at all. I have a theory that only blocking actual damage does drain stamina. If the block only shields you from a special effect which carries no damage, the block is free.

Dks block an additional 10% to all attacks and Templars block 15% from melee attacks. Keep that in mind when testing.
