Windows 10 - Suddenly not working

Until about Wed, 1 Apr, I was playing ESO on a Windows 10 desktop. Then I received build 10041 and 10049 of Windows and suddenly ESO is crashing.

I can login and get to the character selection screen. However I can't get a character to load. When I select play I will get the loading screen for the area but then the screens (monitor I am playing on and my second monitor) will go black with music playing and I have to reboot the PC. Other times it will crash to desktop. The first time, and not since, I got as far as seeing my character but then crash to desktop. I don't' think I had sound that time. My guess is either sound (realtek) or video drivers (Nvidia) but I have no ability to change video drivers and I reinstalled the old audio drivers without it helping.

Andy suggestions on what to try?

Thanks for the forum link. I posted to that thread. Until the last update everything was working fine. In fact I hadn't found any of my programs that didn't work correctly. So ESO suddenly not working caught me by surprise.

I too use windows 10 exclusively. I built my PC right about the time they started this, and I thought, hey why not try it.

Glad I did, fast and stable and easy to use.

I suggest a couple things. Make sure you are not using the upgrade build of windows. I had that originally, and it was a little wonky, mostly with my razer gear. Once they brought out the ability to make a boot usb with a clean build, I did (that was around January I think). Golden since.

Also, remember, anything that is fussy, put it in compatible mode with 8.1. Once I have done that I never have an issue. The razer crap still runs that way.

As for 2.03, all I can say is I run fine, but I have been getting some bug submit bomb outs when I interact with things in environment. Doubt thats windows though.

I remember I did a clean install. I always do a clean install, even with upgrade media (just put it in when asked fro verification). Not sure how I can tell now if the build is upgrade or not. Though I have been on it since soon after release.

Everything was working fine till this week. Then first I had no sound (reinstalled realtek 8.1 drivers) and then the crashing. I tried changing compatibility mode on the launcher to both 7 and 8 but both resulted in system crashes. Should I track down the exe and put it in compatibility mode? I looked once but didn't find it.

I went to play again just now and the game is crashing again. When I went to start ESO it said that it couldn't determine what version I was running and had me run Repair. Something in the Repair broke it for Windows 10.

Restarted the Launcher and it again wanted to repair. Running it as Admin fixed that issue. I set eso.exe to run in Win 8 compatibility mode and at present everything appears to be working again

Upgraded to Windows 10 yesterday on my laptop and haven't been able to get the game to launch. Still playing around with settings and seeing what I can do.

If I find anything that works I'll post an update.

If you are curious if Windows 7 or Windows 8 is better, just ask your local IT department. Nearly all of them have opted to skip the mess that is Windows 8 and wait til Windows 10 to upgrade. Seriously.

"Your local IT department" is not the best source of information for home gamers. "Your local IT department" has to design their systems for the lowest common denominator (a typical computer user in offices isn't very computer literate) and cost of maintenance. Maybe if you are installing an os for your grandparents then "your local IT department" recs might be a good fit.

Take a look at Steam stats and compare the Win 8.x adoption rates of Steam gamers versus overall adoption rates in the workplace. Steam gamers tend to be more knowledgeable about their computers.

    http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey
    http://www.netmarketshare.com/operating-system-market-share.aspx?qprid=10&qpcustomd=0

PC gamers have totally different requirements. They'll usually put in the time and effort to coax even a 3%-5% increase in speed just to get an edge.

Win 8.x is slightly faster and more secure than Win 7. The Win 8.x ui doesn't appeal to everyone but it's easier than ever to disable the Metro/Modern ui and have the traditional desktop as default. So hating the ui is no excuse to avoid Win 8.x anymore.

This debate over Win 8.x versus Win 7 won't matter much in 2-3 months when Win 10 is released. Then it'll be Win 10 versus Win 7 and I think Win 10 will easily win over gamers. Especially because it'll be free. ;)

Exactly. I cant wait to upgrade. Note, its Free for 1 Year. Im curious to see where the chips fall on this. I imagine folks could reload their PC once per year if necessary.

BTW, even Microsoft realizes Win8.X is a FLOP . *winks*

Win 10 is free forever if you get it in the first year. They might begin charging for a boxed Win 10 (for people who didn't upgrade during the free year) after the year is up.

Win 8.x is a good os. It is faster, more secure, and includes lots of little improvements like running SSDs better. One third of Steam users wouldn't be using Win 8.x if it sucked for gaming. The negative things you are reading are the marketing gripes about why it wasn't as popular as Win 7.

I'm glad you are enjoying Windows 8, and I'm happy at least somebody is. I know other people that love it, and I know a lot more people that hate it, but its just an opinion. Me? Well I didn't like Windows 8 on my new PC at all. Personally I thought it was horrible and an Abomination of an OS, and my opinion had absolutely nothing to do with marketing.

Feel free to message me if you want to continue this debate, but I feel we have strayed off topic too much from the OP.

    Strange.

Zos is the foolish one if they don't support Win10.

It is coming this year, for free to Win7/Win8 and Win 8.1.

The installed Win10 base will be quite a bit larger than all those combined.

Also, DirectX 12 is coming like a freight train. Some consideration for that should be given.

Next if you are driving a 32bit OS take it out back [snip], more and more games will be 64bit only.

I feel like I heard all this before, in regards to 32 bit OS and DX10 and 11. I agree with you, but adoption rates are always super-slow, and mmos are the last genre to catch up.

Actually with DirectX12 being an exclusive for Windows 10, it may not be such a sure shot in my opinion. Unless you also do OpenGL and DirectX11, you would be missing on the Mac/Linux/SteamOS, and PS4 markets.

Wouldn't be missing much if you're worried about "Mac/Linux/SteamOS." Mac + Linux + SteamOS is less than 5% of all Steam gamers.

That 5% may not seem much, but Valve is almost betting it's future on it. And with AMD's Mantle and glNext just around the corner, why would anyone tie themselves to Win10/XboxOne exclusively?

Mantle is dead, already, said officially months ago by AMD at this point. That was easily predictable and I did so on tech forums when it was announced as we already knew of DX12's improvements coming around back then. DX12 not only does the job better, but was already functional on all video cards instead of just AMD's which account for ~30% or less of the market, and DX12-targeted API calls would do relatively easy (development-wise) fallbacks on DX11 hardware. Windows 10 is a free upgrade to all Windows 7 and 8 owners and will be available as easily as a windows update download like a service pack is in terms of ease of install (I think they actually started offering the preview that way now, too). On DX11 titles it provides a large amount of extra performance due to the draw call and shader optimizations alone, and on DX12-targeted games it eclipses the fairly meager gains Mantle ever was able to show on the several major game titles it ever was used in commercially. It was a simple trend to see coming, and as everyone expected, the major middlewares and game engines all have DX12 support either implemented for development use now (such as Unity 5) or ready to build on (Unreal Engine 4), while most in-house engines will be targetted at it from here on out except some already in-progress projects.

Running 8.1 here....8320 at 5ghz/h60 etc....I think my WD Blue Died/dieing though....so downloading now gonna try again with old Hitatchi....still though some noticeable frame drops/stuttering going on...270 kinda bottlenecking etc.

Is there any tweaks/something I can do to get this running bit better on AMD?

If you noticed the stuttering only after moving to the older HDD, it may be due to the slower read/write times on the page file. I'm just guessing here. If you have a 2nd harddrive installed you could potentially improve performance by moving the page file to the 2nd hardrive. That's only assuming that the problem is stemming from page file writes/reads.

How much RAM do you have? 4GB? You could alternately try to add more RAM, but obviously this isn't a free option.

You should consider opening a new thread though as this is off topic and will not get much exposure buried in this thread. :)

8 gigs 1866mhz oced 1600 gskill. ram isn't the issue..pretty sure it was more drive related. With Page file I even tried disabling/a minimum amount no difference....yeah would get a lot of those real fast/quick BSOD's
I know a few I seen were System exception's...a few think see Watchdog time outs that was probably more because 8320 wasn't stable with OC/voltage etc

tested the ram with Windows Diagnostic and Memtest never found anything of course. all PSU voltages look good except i I notice 3.3v rails dropping to like 3.24 etc..still well within ATX spec...12v rails never go below 12v hangs around 12.05v under load so that's fine.

The Hitatchi I have is an older Desktar access times are even longer.. but I noticed CPU usage is like cut in half compared to the WD Blue....and I see a lot Spikes with Read/Writes/Transfer as well/just all over the place with the WD...I don't know.. didn't use to be that bad....actually got to the point of restarts..and eventually data corruption...telling you something isn't right with this drive...never failed SMART though or anything else...no errors/nothing....

It's MUCH better now...no where near the hitching/stuttering I was getting...It's pretty smooth now...occasional hiccup though. In towns of course/a lot stuff going on the Screen etc...270 Bottlenecking? can drop to 45-50fps pretty easy... especially when a lot is going on yeah ill see the gpu hit 90-99% useage and stuff...

need to get a hold of a 290 or a 970 etc sounds like.
